John Isner, Kevin Anderson in Wimbledon epic

John Isner celebrates his win

That mark was set by another five-setter between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro in 2013.

Isner and Anderson needed some time to adapt their game for the challenges on the ATP Tour but they didn't need too much time to find their rhythm and crack the Top 100, continuing to move through the rankings and earning a chance to play for the Wimbledon final 11 years after their ultimate Collegiate battle.

A full but slightly tired Centre Court crowd geared up for a long decider, and on and on and on it went until, after six hours and 35 minutes, Anderson sealed his place in the final. Isner won that best-of-three match 7-6, 6-1. The former Bulldog broke right back to even the set once again. Isner took the second set tiebreaker 7-6 (5), punctuating it with an ace.

That didn't happen through the first 12 games of the last set, with each player holding serve to reach 6-all.

After each of his service games, Isner was one game away from the win, which was likely more agonizing than helpful, especially as Anderson continued to pummel aces and winners to bring things back even.

John Isner has won the second set against Kevin Anderson 7-6 (5) to level their Wimbledon semifinal at 1-1.

Isner is 33 years old now, a veteran on the ATP Tour.

The 32-year-old Anderson will vie for the title on Sunday against the victor of the match between Nadal, the world No. 1, and three-time champion Novak Djokovic.

Nadal leads their series 26-25 heading into Friday's match, including 9-4 at Grand Slam tournaments.

The three-time Wimbledon champion posted a video to his Instagram story of him playing marbles in the dressing room as he prepares to face Nadal.

The other men's semifinal features two big servers bidding for a first major championship: Kevin Anderson of South Africa and John Isner of the U.S.
