Don't be surprised if you lose followers — Twitter purge

Twitter shares fell 5 percent on Monday on concern that removing millions of fake accounts would impede user growth.

Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Thursday that Twitter "removed 4,000 of my followers" as the social networking site purged fake accounts - including 300,000 reportedly from President Donald Trump's feed - that were disabled because of suspicious activity.

USA singer Katy Perry, the most-followed user on Twitter, and Lady Gaga lost about 2.5 million followers.

CEO Ezekiel Mutua is another casualty whose account has dropped from over 100,000 followers to a meagre 34,000. Controversial blogger, Cyprian Nyakundi, has lost quite a lot of followers, from over 1 million to now below 700K.

This is not the first time a celebrity has lost followers on Twitter. The accounts that Twitter was purging today were locked accounts that the company "detected sudden changes in account behaviour" and if the owners didn't validate their accounts, they were henceforth purged.

Twitter's purge of suspicious accounts Wednesday has resulted in the social media platform's most popular users taking big hits to their number of followers.

On Wednesday, Twitter said it was making the change in order to boost the credibility of follower-count numbers and improve transparency.

Twitter, in a blog, stated that it would suspend private accounts in a bid to curb fake news by limiting fake users: "Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate". He also added that the new protections policy has helped Twitter to prevent more than 50,000 fake signups per day. Officials said this will help make Twitter a "more trusted service for public conversation".

Twitter said that most users will see a drop of "four followers or fewer".
