Donald Trump ready to help some NATO states buy US arms

U.S. President Donald Trump walks off stage after holding a news conference before departing the NATO Summit in Brussels Belgium Thursday

Speaking in Brussels, U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said he had not heard any of his European Union counterparts talk positively about Nord Stream 2 and said Washington didn't like it because it didn't promote diversity of supply.

"It will be over a relatively short period of years", Trump said.

Hundreds of demonstrators chanted outside the US ambassador's residence where Trump was staying on the outskirts of London, providing a preview of the forceful protests expected during his two-day British stay.

It was a classic Trump performance - bluster, confrontation and demands followed by a unilateral declaration of victory - but his claim was quickly dismissed by the leaders of Italy and France, who disputed they had made any new pledges for increasing spending.

At the end of the first day, Trump unsettled allies even more by questioning the value of the military alliance, which was formed to counter Soviet aggression during the Cold War. "All I can do is say "Did you?' and 'Don't do it again" - but he may deny it".

"They actually thanked me for meeting with President Putin", he said. Trump's United Kingdom visit comes ahead of a planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on July 16. "The heart of Trump's message was positive", a French source told ABC. "It confirms the goal of 2 percent by 2024".

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg cited a "new sense of urgency, and all allies agreed to redouble their efforts".

Reversing the harsh criticisms he has leveled at NATO, President Trump says the alliance is very strong - in part because of promises from America's allies to boost their military budgets to 2 percent of their gross domestic product.

"The people of Georgia do deserve a fast track to the NATO Alliance", Margvelashvili said on the second day of the alliance's summit in Brussels.

"I am very glad that we are united today in freedom as the Federal Republic of Germany and that we can therefore also make our own independent policies and make our own independent decisions".

He added that Trump makes a fair point in warning that Germany relies too heavily on Russian Federation for energy, recalling that Putin has used his control of gas supplies as a weapon against Ukraine.

Instead, a series of events a black-tie dinner with business leaders, a meeting with May and an audience with Queen Elizabeth II will happen outside the bustling city, where Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in a verbal battle with Trump.
