Chemical explosion outside Cairo airport injures 12

Egypt explosion

An explosion ripped through fuel tanks near Egypt's Cairo airport on Thursday evening, igniting a fire in the area, but the country's civil aviation minister said air movement was unaffected.

A number of local tweets poured in with users claiming to have heard a loud explosion followed by the sounds of ambulances.

According to Military Spokesperson Tamer al-Rifai, preliminary reports suggest the explosion took place due to the high temperature caused by the hot weather.

Residents in different parts of East Cairo took to social media, saying the explosion rocked the districts of Fifth Settlement, Heliopolis and the 10th of Ramadan City - all situated near the airport.

Though there isn't any official information yet, some speculate that the explosion could somehow be connected to clashes between ISIS and Egyptian security forces in the region. The bomb eventually exploded, killing everyone on board.
