Behind President Trump's claim of new funding from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members

Trump rails against Germany, demands allies double NATO spending

The Kremlin's spokesman said today Russian President Vladimir Putin and USA leader Donald Trump would address reporters after their Helsinki summit next week but were not obliged to make a joint statement.

"It's disturbing and even painful to watch, but NATO emerges significantly stronger as a result of Trump's tactics, however unbecoming", said retired Canadian Forces colonel Brett Boudreau, who spent three years at NATO headquarters as spokesman and adviser to the chairman of the NATO military committee.

"Everyone's agreed to substantially up their commitments, they've agreed to up it to levels that they have never thought of before". "It's been fantastic to see the level of spirit in that room".

He had thrown the summit into crisis by demanding countries meet a spending target of 2 per cent of gross domestic product immediately, instead of by 2024, and to eventually double spending to 4 per cent.

Speaking in Brussels, US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said he had not heard any of his European Union counterparts talk positively about Nord Stream 2 and said Washington didn't like it because it didn't promote diversity of supply.

Trump declared that he had ended the nuclear threat from North Korea, but one senior US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said: "Who's to say he won't come out of Helsinki saying he and Putin agreed that Russian Federation no longer poses a threat to the rest of Europe?"

"The concerns about Russian Federation, the concerns about threats to the alliance were met with solidarity and unity", he said, "and we are looking forward to a good meeting and a productive and constructive meeting between President Putin and President Trump".

The head of the Polish president's National Security Bureau, Paweł Soloch, said that US President Donald Trump's opinion "is important if the project is to be blocked". Trump then went on to say that Washington was "extremely tough on Russia" under his rule.

Under fire for his warm embrace of Russia's Vladimir Putin, Trump on Wednesday also turned a harsh spotlight on Germany's own ties to Russian Federation, alleging that a natural gas pipeline venture with Moscow has left Angela Merkel's government "totally controlled" and "captive" to Russian Federation.

Trump's surprise demand came after he clashed with Chancellor Angela Merkel, calling Germany a "captive" of Russian Federation because of its gas links and singling out Berlin for failing to pay its way. "[But] We have no choice", Trump concluded. Five of 29 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations now hit that mark. Now, never more vividly apparent than in his behavior Wednesday, President Donald Trump seems perfectly inclined to dismantle it, if that serves his goal. On Thursday, Trump said he wasn't troubled by the planned protests.

Trump poured fuel on the Brexit fire just hours before he was due to land there, saying he was not sure that Britons had voted for the Brexit plan presented by Prime Minister Theresa May, which has triggered a British cabinet rebellion.

With allies fearing he could strike some sort of deal with Nato's key adversary, Trump said that he saw Putin as a "competitor" but not an "enemy".

"So I would imagine that's what they will do, but maybe they will take a little bit of a different route".

"I'm sorry, they're for White House staff", they were told as they tried to grab vacant seats at the front.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro will lead a high-level team attending the Farnborough Airshow outside London next week to advocate on behalf of USA aerospace and defence companies. "That's all", said Macron, who also denied talk of Trump threatening to withdraw from the alliance.
