Wimbledon won't budge on World Cup final clash

Novak Djokovic is hoping to see a full court for the men’s final but the lure of football may be too much to resist

Wimbledon is standing firm, however, on its decision not to change the start time of Sunday's men's final to avoid a conflict with the World Cup final, even if England makes it that far, Lewis reiterated.

Wimbledon fans on Centre Court will be allowed to use phones and tablets to follow the World Cup final, the head of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has said.

But Wimbledon chief executive Richard Lewis stuck to his view that spectators coming to the grasscourt championships expect to see tennis and said that big-screen policy will remain in place to limit the disruption caused to players.

"Our attitude is if people aren´t affecting other people´s enjoyment of the tennis because they´ve got it on silent or whatever, or they are listening with an earphone, or whatever, that´s fine", he said.

The concession will enable Wimbledon-going soccer fans to stream the remaining World Cup matches or check on their progress while watching matches, whether via headphones or silenced.

Wimbledon could detract from cup final, jokes Roger Federer
Djokovic overcame a series of rows with the chair umpire to record a 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-2 victory over Japan's former US Open finalist. Federer was completely out of sorts by now and his uncharacteristic struggles on his forehand didn't improve in the fourth set.

"What will happen next Sunday is Centre Court will be packed for the men's final and I'm sure people will be able to follow the World Cup final", Lewis told reporters on Monday. "They'll hear every point, wow, love-15, 15-30", he said.

England's rise through the World Cup tournament has dispelled decades of frustration at past dismal performances.

Moreover, Lewis said the All England Club would not erect TV screens on the grounds so ticket holders could watch the World Cup, nor will they use the existing oversize screen on Henman Hill behind Court No. 1 for any objective other than tennis.

There are multiple matches going on at the same time, so fans who arrive early can enjoy tennis from 11 a.m. onwards.

"People followed the football on their devices thanks to modern technology without disturbing other spectators". We didn't receive a single complaint from anyone who was here who felt their enjoyment of the tennis was interrupted and I'm sure it'll be the same next Sunday.
