Wimbledon 2018: Angelique Kerber Storms Into Second Final As Jelena Ostapenko Misfires

Angelique Kerber

Angelique Kerber reached her second Wimbledon final after nullifying the threat of Jelena Ostapenko.

"I'm really happy and proud to be in a Grand Slam final".

Ostapenko suddenly began to land some big blows, clawing back a couple of games and had a point to narrow the deficit to a single game as Kerber showed late nerves.

The 11th seed saved a break point in game six before breaking Ostapenko's serve in the next game.

"I was expecting that she is playing like she played from the beginning: really hard, pushing me back", Kerber said. "Then I was just trying to find my rhythm and take my chances when I had them".

The women's final will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. ET, where Williams will face Germany's Angelique Kerber, who is seeded 11th.

Despite making 18 first-set winners compared to only six from Kerber, the 21-year-old also made 19 unforced errors, with Kerber only making two.

With her compatriot already advancing to the final, Goerges hoped to make it an all-German affair, but Williams proved too strong in the second of two disappointingly one-sided semi-finals.

Kerber, who spent 34 weeks at world number one in 2016 and 2017, could be set for a rematch with Williams if the seven-time champion can get past Julia Goerges in the second semi-final.

Five games in, Ostapenko led 3-2, and the numbers were still tilted toward her.

Showing her first sign of nerves Kerber wasted a match point and was broken when she served at 5-1.

"These are the matches I was working for as a young kid", Kerber said, "and to stand here again in the final at Wimbledon is great". "You never know what happen if it went to 5-4".

In only her fourth tournament since the birth of her daughter Olympia in September, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is bidding to win her first major title as a mother.

After suffering a drastic loss of form in 2017, ending the year ranked outside the top 20, a rejuvenated Kerber is back where she feels she clearly belongs.
