Trump visit: London on LOCKDOWN as trip to spark protests

The President is set to enjoy a working lunch with Theresa May during his visit More

Mass protests are expected to greet Donald Trump as he arrives for his first visit to Britain as president.

After a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit where he provoked a crisis session to force allies to raise their defence spending, Trump landed in Britain having described the closest U.S. ally in Europe as being in turmoil over Brexit.

"They will. I have no doubt about it", he said.

Similar protests are planned on Thursday evening outside the USA ambassador's home at Regent's Park and in Scotland when Mr Trump visits on Saturday.

On reaching the residence the pair walked across the lawn hand-in-hand. Many will see his avoidance of London as proof he is trying to keep away from dissent, however, the United States ambassador to the UK, Woody Johnson, denied this.

Lance Price, who served as former Prime Minister Tony Blair's media adviser, told the Independent that no matter what the American convoy contends, the fact that Donald Trump is avoiding London points to a moral victory for the protesters.

"Presidents have been trying unsuccessfully for years to get Germany and other rich NATO Nations to pay more toward their protection from Russian Federation", one tweet said.

After spending the night at the U.S. ambassador's official residence in Regent's Park, London, President Trump will join Mrs May at a military base on Friday to observe a joint counter-terrorism exercise involving United Kingdom and USA special forces.

Despite a series of diplomatic spats between Britain and Trump, the British government is hoping for a quick trade deal with the United States after it leaves the European Union.

On Thursday, Trump will travel to Blenheim Palace, the 18th-century mansion where Britain's World War Two leader Winston Churchill was born and spent most of his childhood.

The event will begin with a military parade featuring the bands of the Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards in the spectacular Great Court.

He has clashed in the past with May - even though she is a fellow conservative who shares his view that defense spending should be hiked - and with her predecessor, David Cameron, who challenged Mr. Trump's anti-Muslim campaign stance as "divisive, stupid and wrong".

The US Embassy has warned American citizens to keep a low profile during the visit in case protests turn violent.

Trump will then join wife Melania as they head to Windsor Castle for their audience with the Queen before flying out to Scotland, where they are expected to visit both Trump Turnberry and Trump International Golf Links Scotland. The blimp, which depicts the president as a giant, orange child in a diaper, will fly over Parliament for two hours on Thursday.

Cheddar Gorgeous has helped organise the drag protest against Trump on Friday. Organizers now say they hope to take the blimp on a "world tour", following Trump on his worldwide diplomatic engagements.

"I think whenever his detractors go after him, it makes him double down and it actually encourages him to keep going and prove everybody wrong", she said.

"We need to show the world what millions of people in this country think of the bigotry and the hatred that he represents", protest organizer Owen Jones said.

Blimp organizer Leo Murray said it had been created to speak to Trump "in a language that he understands, which is personal insults". "I don't know [if] that is what they voted for", he added.
