Scrapped drill with S. Korea would have cost $14 mn: Pentagon

The canceled Ulchi Freedom Guardian joint military exercise with South Korea this summer would have cost the US about $14 million, according to the Pentagon.

After Trump met with the North's leader Kim Jong Un on June 12, the president announced he would halt all joint "war games" with South Korea so long as North Korea was negotiating in good faith.

On Tuesday, North Korean state media published several reports about Kim's visit to a rural area near the Chinese border where he provided "field guidance" to potato farmers.

The president says he believes the North Korean leader wants to denuclearize, and that he "trusts" him.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner, D-Virginia, wrote to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats on Thursday, asking him to answer a number of questions related to North Korea's progress, in light of statements made by President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"Certainly they can make a decision whether or not those drills are reinstated if they decide to do so based on North Korea's actions", he said.

Trump faced a backlash for scrapping the drills, with critics saying he gave in too readily to Kim's request to halt the exercises while getting little in terms of tangible commitments from Pyongyang in return.

While China may be genuinely committed to pushing Pyongyang to denuclearize, it'll inevitably bear the brunt of any back-and-forth from North Korea's delivery, according to Tsai Tung-Chieh, a professor of global politics at National Chung Hsing University in Taichung, central Taiwan.

According to Chosun Ilbo, Kim brought up the "rocket man" moniker during the summit, and Trump asked Kim if he knew the song to which Trump was referring, but Kim answered that he didn't.

Trump did not give any sense of when he might give the CD to Kim.

The Pentagon has not received direction to restart military drills with South Korea, Manning said. "Instead, he will feel more eased sided by South Korea and China and can certainly leverage the three-to-one advantage to constrain the U.S".
