Phil Mickelson breaks rules again, this time at Greenbrier

Phil Mickelson assessed himself a 2-stroke penalty when he didn't have

Mickelson stamped down fescue grass with his foot in front of the 7th tee at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in West Virginia early Monday (NZT).

Phil Mickelson, criticised after he absorbed a two-shot penalty for an intentional rules violation at the US Open, was on the wrong side of golf's rules again at the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday.

Three weeks on from his freakish actions at the U.S. Open, Phil Mickelson found himself at the center of another highly unusual rules controversy on Sunday.

The penalty on Sunday did little to affect Mickelson's chances. Why not quickly move the grass out of the way so the ball doesn't hit it?

During the final round of the Greenbrier Classic, Mikcleson could be seen trampling down on the glass before suddenly realising that what he had done might well be a violation of the rules.

Let's hope Wrighty and Keano are sat next to each other on the plane home from Russian Federation . You know how hard it is to get to these big finals, or even get to a World Cup.

By that definition, Mickelson did violate the rule.

After consulting a rules official, Phil Mickelson assessed himself a 2-stroke penalty for improving his line of play (violation of Rule 13-2).

In reality, the penalty didn't change much.

Kevin Na (18 under) led U.S. compatriot Kelly Kraft by three shots through 11 holes of the final round.

Mickelson had clearly learnt from the mistakes of how he handled his incident at the US Open and keen to avoid further criticism and confrontation, so it has to be admired at the good grace in which he handled this latest incident.
