PayPal apologizes after telling dead woman she's in breach of contract

But earlier this month, she received a letter from PayPal, saying her death was a breach of its rules-and the service was considering legal action against her.

It's hard to defend the company that would send a letter like this, but one has to realize that business is business, and PayPal likely has legal reasons for sending out letters before they close an account.

PayPal immediately apologized for the gaffe and said it's treating the situation as a "priority" as it figures out what happened.

Lindsay Durdle died on May 31, succumbing to cancer.

Consequently, Mr. Durdle received a payment notice yesterday at his residence in Bucklebury, West Berkshire, addressed to his wife.

But Mr Durdle became distressed as he read the letter headed: 'Important: You should read this notice carefully'.

We are not required to give any further notice before taking such action, however we do understand that you may be experiencing financial difficulties and are eager to help.

It stated that Lindsay had an outstanding balance of £3,240.72 - or about $4,300.

PayPal has since said the letter was "insensitive", apologized to the widower and launched a probe into how the letter was sent in the first place.

A husband who recently lost his wife has been left shocked and saddened after a letter arrived at his home that said his wife was "in breach of contract" because of her death.

He added that PayPal had told him it would not be able to share the cause behind the letter's mailing because it was an "internal matter".

Mr Durdle contacted PayPal over the letter, who told him it would have been sent out due to either a bug, a bad letter template or a human error, the BBC reported.

Durdle had a balance of about £3,200, or $4,200, according to the letter, which said that PayPal meant to "take action".

"I'm a member of the charity Widowed and Young, and I've seen first-hand in there how a letter like this or something like it can completely derail somebody", Durdle told the BBC.

The firm has also written off any outstanding debt in the meantime.

He continued: "If I'm going to make any fuss about this at all, it's to make sure that PayPal, or any other organization that might do this kind of insensitive thing, recognizes the damage they can cause the recently bereaved".

"We are urgently looking into this matter, and are in direct contact with Mr Durdle to support him".
