Officer Who Appeared to Ignore Puerto Rican Flag Shirt Episode Resigns

A Chicago woman became the center of a national controversy in the US during the summer of 2018, after she posted a video online showing a man berating her in a public park because she was wearing a t-shirt bearing the flag of Puerto Rico - all while a local police officer stood by, unresponsive to her pleas for assistance.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America", the man, identified as 62-year-old Timothy Trybus shouts. He gets closer to her and asks "Are you a citizen?"

"That officer did absolutely nothing - he did absolutely zero", Irizarry said in the video, which was streamed from her Facebook profile on June 14, but gained a wider audience this week.

"I always say this when it comes to video: The video doesn't look good, but anybody who's a football fan knows that the video doesn't tell the entire story", Tamara Cummings, general counsel for the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council, said Wednesday.

The video also shows Irizarry ask a nearby officer, Connor, for help, but he does not appear to intervene.

"The craziest thing is there's all these cops here and I still don't feel safe", she later adds.

County Commissioner Luis Arroyo Jr. said at a news conference that Officer Patrick Connor "embarrassed many of our law enforcement officers and tarnished the whole department with his failure to act".

The Forest Preserve Superintendent will speak more about the matter Thursday morning. A spokesman said the investigation into the incident continues and aspects of it will be further addressed, but offered no further information or details. "We might start with the fine example presented by Mia Irizarry and her family, who handled this ugly incident with great composure, never stooping to the level of the man who attacked her".

Meanwhile, England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted he couldn't listen to Three Lions for 20 years . Former and current England cricketers also expressed their disappointment of the result.

During the clip, which went on to be viewed almost two million times, Trybus yells at Irizarry that she "should not be wearing that in the United States of America" in reference to her Puerto Rican flag shirt, as well as repeatedly asking if she is an American citizen.

Officials on Tuesday said that Conner was the officer being investigated.

Then she says: "Officer, I'm renting, I paid for a permit for this area".

"A charge for simple assault or disorderly conduct is not sufficient", García said. Then you should not be wearing that. Irizarry is heard telling Trybus that Puerto Rico is part of the United States as he approaches her multiple times. "I do not feel comfortable with him here, is there anything you can do?" Can you please grab him?

"You don't come here harassing people", the officer continues. "People have just as much right to be here as you do, and when you're drunk you don't belong here".

She said the incident went on much longer than the video showed, even after Trybus was in custody and placed in a squad auto.

"I felt so drawn out", she said in the interview. Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in USA presidential primaries, but not in presidential elections.
