Multivitamins Don't Boost Heart Health, Huge Study Finds

Experts said multivitamins did not have the same benefits as eating fruit and vegetables

The authors of the meta-analysis reached this conclusion after pooling and then analyzing data collected from 18 randomized controlled trials and cohort studies that investigated whether multivitamin and mineral supplements influenced cardiovascular outcomes.

Despite these findings, about one-third of all people in the USA use multivitamin and mineral supplements, with the global nutritional supplement industry expected to reach $278 billion by 2024, according the to American Heart Association.

This means that the market, especially online, is flooded with "fake" medications and supplements.

Cardiologists say things that have been shown to be heart healthy beyond a good diet include getting regular exercise and not smoking, as well as keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels in check.

Dr. Joonseok Kim, a cardiologist and the studys lead researcher, said its time to stop investing time and money in studying the relationship between multivitamins with minerals and heart disease and stroke because theres strong evidence they dont prevent the chronic diseases.

There has been longstanding controversy about the effectiveness of these supplements and the American Heart Association does not recommend using these products to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Phil Mickelson breaks rules again, this time at Greenbrier
Kevin Na (18 under) led U.S. compatriot Kelly Kraft by three shots through 11 holes of the final round. The penalty on Sunday did little to affect Mickelson's chances.

“People tend to prefer a quick and easy solution such as taking a pill [rather] than the more effortful method to prevent cardiovascular disease, ” he said. And because dietary supplements arent regulated the same as drugs, they dont have to be proven safe or effective before making their way to store shelves.

The relationship between dietary supplements and cardiovascular disease has been debated for many years, despite the findings of many studies that there is no association.

One in three Americans take multivitamins and minerals, spending an estimated $21 billion on supplements every year. The lower incidence of coronary heart disease among users of multivitamin and mineral supplements in the European and Japanese studies may, therefore, have been due to their diet rather than to the supplements.

Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, the American Heart Association's chief medical officer for prevention and chief of the Association's Centers for Health Metrics and Evaluation, who was not a part of this study, said in a statement: "Eat a healthy diet for a healthy heart and a long, healthy life". "However recent guidelines suggest we all may wish to consider vitamin D supplementation, particularly during winter months", he said, when sunlight is scarce, as the vitamin is synthesized in the body through exposure to the sun.

Based on the analysis, the researchers found that taking multivitamins did not prevent heart attacks, strokes, and death from cardiovascular disease.
