Dramatic Video Captures Moment Towering Iceberg Splits from Greenland Glacier

Enormous 4 mile long iceberg filmed breaking from Greenland glacier

So far, the Thwaites Glacier, a part of the Western Antarctic Ice Sheet that has already drained a mass of water that is roughly the size of Great Britain or the state of Florida, has accounted for approximately 4 percent of global sea-level rise -an amount that has doubled since the mid-1990s. Such events could help researchers understand how glaciers will respond to natural variability and human-induced changes.

The video depicts Helheim Glacier and was shot by New York University's Denise Holland.

David Holland, an NYU professor responsible of leading the expedition to Greenland who described the Helheim glacier calving to be as wide and shallow "like a pancake" has clarified that a single section of this iceberg is just as big as lower and midtown Manhattan put together, and in this case being thrown into the ocean and sending it to drift until it eventually melts, causing global sea levels to rise.

"And here we can see his wonderful significance", notes the study's lead author David Holland, Professor, Institute of mathematics NY. The video shows a 6.4-km-long iceberg that breaks off from the glacier and goes to sea.

Footage from inside Thailand cave shows trapped boys' escape route
Narongsak, giving details of the rescue, said falling oxygen levels inside the cave complex had added a sense of urgency. Narongsak Osatanakorn, who oversaw the rescue operation , said the boys should not be blamed for their near tragedy.

She said: "The better we understand what's going on means we can create more accurate simulations to help predict and plan for climate change".

Previously HB reported that an global group of scientists found that the rate of melting of the Antarctic sheets of ice has accelerated threefold in the last five years.

The impact could see the largest desert in the world turn lush green as the rise in temperature causes the rain belt surrounding Earth to swell. It's a tabular iceberg, long and flat; in the video, you can also see tall, thin pinnacle icebergs crack off and flip over. The latest calving event also suggests that ice sheet melting is taking place with increased strength and at a speed that no models have predicted before.

Denise Holland, a research team field manager with NYU, caught the eye-opening occurrence on video, which condenses 30 minutes of activity down to about 90 seconds.
