Anderson stuns Federer in five-set thriller

Wimbledon

Roger Federer and his flawless run through the 2018 Wimbledon tennis tournament thus far next face Kevin Anderson in Wednesday's Men's Singles quarterfinals match.

The decider went on serve deep into double figures, before Anderson broke in the decisive 23rd game to set up a chance to serve the match - a chance he duly took to win 2-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 13-11.

Roger Federer admitted he was shell-shocked as the Swiss star struggled to come to terms with his "terrible" Wimbledon quarter-final exit against Kevin Anderson.

And, despite his two-set advantage, the 20-times grand slam victor never looked entirely comfortable, despite having never previously lost a set to Anderson in four other meetings. By the end I was able to do a great job and I wasn't thinking too much.

"I didn't see it coming", Federer said. I don't know if it had something to do with the breeze, just a bad day from my side, except the first set.

It's Anderson's very first time in the Wimbledon semi-finals and he will now face either Milos Raonic or John Isner for a place in the final.

Federer and Anderson, who played 24 games in the deciding fifth set, had still not finished by the time Nadal and Del Potro took the Centre Court. After Anderson calmed down and lost a pretty tight second set, Federer's forehand started going wayward.

"Yeah, of course, the goal is to come back here next year", said Federer, who has won three Grand Slams over the last two years.

It will be Djokovic's first Grand Slam semi-final since the 2016 US Open as he continues his bid to return to the top of the game. The 2011, 2014 and 2015 champion was clearly unsettled by the dispute, quickly surrendering the set.

Federer ultimately paid the price for failing to convert any more than three of 12 break-point opportunities, including three in a row with Anderson serving at love-40 in the fourth set. Things went back-and-forth and into a tiebreak.

Anderson grew up in South Africa before heading to the University of IL to compete in the Big Ten on a tennis scholarship.

But he has been fairly solid at the Slams ever since, making at least the last-16 at all the majors - with the exception of a first round blip at the Australian Open this year.

The South African is through to the last eight for the first time, and he said: 'Playing somebody like Roger Federer is going to be a great experience.

Federer has won all four of the previous head-to-head matchups, most recently taking down Anderson 6-1, 6-1 at the 2015 Cincinnati Masters.

Federer had been the favourite to win a record-extending ninth men's singles title, but was beaten in a contest that lasted more than four hours. He'd only reached one quarterfinal before this year's Wimbledon (2011 U.S. Open).

The second set was a closer affair, and after a service break apiece, the set had to be decided by a tiebreaker, which the 20-time grand slam victor won 7-5, to look in complete control of proceedings at two sets up.
