Woman bitten by shark while posing for Instagram photo

Earlier this month, a woman on vacation in Dugong Bay, Australia, experienced a similar ordeal with a tawny nurse shark.

An Instagram model has hit back at criticism from online trolls after being bitten by a shark while posing for photographs.

"They are wild animals, and it's an uncontrollable situation", she said.

According to NBC News, Zarutskie was floating in the waters of Staniel Cay in the Bahamas as her boyfriend's dad took some snaps of her and a big ol' group of nurse sharks.

She's since had to make her Instagram private, after people accused her of blaming the sharks and causing the situation herself, but she insists that's not the case.

The student conceded that she had been advised against going to the water alongside the marine predators prior to the incident.

When asked why she went ahead anyway, she replied, "It's just a once-in-a-lifetime experience".

The aspiring model was under only about eight seconds but it was terrifying nonetheless. She said she later learned that the risk of infection meant she could have lost her arm or her life.

Zarutskie hopes her modeling career will continue and she has not ruled out posing with sharks again. The sharks, however, will bite people as a defense if they are stepped on or bothered. "Normally when they mistake a hand or fingers for a piece of food".

The 19-year-old said it's been a journey healing the bite wound.

"It's been interesting", she said. "What happened was an accident, and I don't want to throw the shark under the bus", Zarutske said.

"Nurse sharks are calm creatures", she told BuzzFeed News, adding that she had seen many Instagram photos of other people swimming with the creatures. As for returning to Staniel Cay, the California native said she would go back in a heartbeat.
