Eritrea: Ethiopian Leader Arrives in Eritrea for Landmark Summit

Abiy is welcomed by Eritrean President Afwerki in Asmara

On Sunday, Ahmed became the first Ethiopian leader to visit Eritrea in over two decades. "A new era of peace and friendship has been ushered (in)".

"1) State of war has come to an end;2) The 2 nations will forge close political, economic, social, cultural & security cooperation 3) Trade, economic&diplomatic ties will resume, 4) The boundary decision will be implemented, 5) Both nations will work on regional peace", read the Ethiopian version.

Images of the ceremony showed the two men sharing a wooden desk, backed by their nations' flags, as they simultaneously signed the document.

The scenes were unimaginable before last month, when an unexpected rapprochement began.

"We will demolish the wall and, with love, build a bridge between the two countries", he said.

The two embraced again at the state dinner, hosted by Afwerki and broadcast on both countries' state television.

A direct global telephone connection between the two countries was restored "for the first time after two decades", he wrote.

Abiy's Chief of Staff Fitsum Arega wrote on Twitter that Ethiopia had officially submitted a request to Guterres during his visit to Addis Ababa for the lifting of sanctions against Eritrea, which include an arms embargo as well as asset freeze and travel bans against select individuals. After two decades of proxy wars and military tensions across a tightly sealed border, their Prime Minister was suddenly being cheered by tens of thousands of ecstatic people in the streets of their former enemy, Eritrea.

President Paul Kagame has commended the historic meeting between the leaders of Eritrea and Ethiopia in Asmara, describing it as the right thing for the people of the two neighbouring countries.

Ethiopian and Eritrean leaders formally restored relations Monday, ending 20 years of enmity, and citizens from both counties immediately began phoning each other to get back in touch.

It's been an unprecedented few days in the Horn of Africa. Once a province of Ethiopia that comprised its entire coastline, Eritrea voted to leave in 1993 after a bloody independence struggle.

The break rendered Ethiopia landlocked, and the deterioration of relations due to the continuing cold war forced Ethiopia to rely on Djibouti for its sea trade.

They opened phone lines between the two countries that had been cut for two decades, and land-locked Ethiopia said it would be given access to the sea at an Eritrean port.

Ethiopia's foreign minister, Workneh Gebeyehu, said flights between the countries would resume next week.

Ethiopia's newly elected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addresses members of parliament inside the House of Peoples' Representatives, during a meeting for the approval of 2018/19 budget in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The decision to fully accept the peace deal was the biggest and most surprising reform yet announced by Ethiopia's prime minister, who took office in April and quickly set off a wave of reforms, freeing journalists and opposition figures from prison, opening up the state-run economy and unblocking hundreds of websites after years of anti-government protests demanding more freedoms.

He has released prominent dissidents from jail and also announced the partial liberalisation of the economy.
