Timehop’s data breach compromised 21 million accounts

Timehop’s database breached compromising data of 21 million users

On July 4, 2018, Timehop experienced a network intrusion that led to a breach of some of your data. The knock-on effect being you'll have to re-authenticate the Timehop app with your social media accounts if you want to keep using it. Users have also been logged out of their Timehop accounts as a security precaution.

Timehop revealed that its security was breached and that the data of 21 million users was compromised.

"If you have noticed any content not loading, it is because Timehop deactivated these proactively", it writes, adding: "We have no evidence that any accounts were accessed without authorization".

According to its preliminary investigation of the incident, the attacker first accessed Timehop's cloud environment in December - using compromised admin credentials, and apparently conducting reconnaissance for a few days that month, and again for another day in March and one in June, before going on to launch the attack on July 4, during a U.S. holiday.

According to preliminary evidence from the investigation, the intrusion took place on December 19, 2017, when a hacker gained access to an admin account for Timehop's cloud infrastructure.

The upshot for users is pretty simple - they'll need to log in again and reauthorise TimeHop.

Timehop, an app which resurfaces memories from your past social media posts, says that it has been hacked.

TimeHop, an add-on for Facebook which reminds users of all the things that happened to them in the past, remains hugely popular despite Facebook itself now offering similar functionality within the main interface. We immediately began actions to deauthorize compromised access tokens, and. worked with our partners to determine whether any of the keys have been used.

The company also says hackers stole "access tokens", which were provided to the company by their social media providers.

Review any apps that have access to accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Photos, and so forth.

"An email to the entire user base is in the works for today", he tells TechCrunch.

In terms of the reasons behind the multifactor fail, the spokesman said it's still investigating why there was a security lapse "as we do in general make use of it". We learned of the breach while it was still in progress, and were able to interrupt it, but data was taken. Furthermore, the company says it's communicating with local and federal law enforcement officials while working through everything. "My hopes are that with the new privacy regulations, such as GDPR, companies will take better care of PII and such incidents will become less common".

Compromised data includes names, email addresses, and phone numbers. However, no financial data or private messages were affected.
