Starbucks to Eliminate Plastic Straws by 2020

The global coffee giant said that it plans to eliminate all single-use plastic straws by 2020, and will instead cap cold drinks with lids that do not require the use of a straw.

In a move meant to cut back on waste, the worldwide coffee giant said Monday that it would eliminate plastic straws from its more than 28,000 locations globally by 2020.

Starbucks will start the transition away from plastic straws in Seattle and in Vancouver in the fall, before launching a phased rollout in the U.S.in its fiscal 2019.

Starbucks will replace straws with specially designed cold-up lids already in use for some specialty drinks.

Say goodbye to plastic straws at Starbucks.

Kevin Johnson, Starbucks president and CEO, called the move a "significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways". McDonald's said in June it would start switching to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland in September. Plastic straws have become one of the biggest targets.

Fueling the movement is increased consumer environmentalism and concern about the many straws that end up polluting oceans and waterways. Among the big names advocating for straw bans are actor Adrian Grenier, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, and actor Kendrick Sampson.

Wes Knopp, the owner of Lone Light Coffee, said, "I think a majority of people would not get a plastic straw if they weren't provided with one automatically. I hope all of you will listen to her". In February, Dunkin' Donuts said that it would eliminate polystyrene foam cups from its stores by 2020.
