Suzuki Jimny fully revealed ahead of debut

Full screen

That all works well off-road, but Suzuki promise the new Jimny will be more forgiving on road with the more rigid ladder frame and steering damper. Suzuki's popular 1.0-litre BoosterJet three-cylinder won't power the new Jimny, but instead a brand new, simpler 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine called K15B arrives.

The company claims that it can churn out a maximum power of 101PS and maximum torque of 130Nm.

But what the Jimny does do is tackle the rough stuff in a way nothing else can - certainly nothing else remotely close to its price - and the new Jimny, due to arrive in the United Kingdom in 2019, promises more of that, but with an added dose of modernity.

Transmission choices will include a four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual for the 1.5 petrol. Suzuki has recently stopped selling diesel-powered cars in the European market, which means the Jimny is also expected to be sold with only the petrol engine option mentioned above.

The Jimny adheres to the Kei vehicle norms for tax sops.

Those tactics include cyber-theft as well as forcing companies to hand over technology in exchange for access to China's market. One seller pointed out that exporters of US-made goods might be impacted through retaliatory tariffs.

The new Jimny will go on sale in the United Kingdom next year, and we'll see full United Kingdom pricing and specifications closer to release. Dimensions are 3480mm long, 1645mm wide and 1725mm high with a wheelbase of 2250mm. However, the overall design remains chunky, with function favoured over form, to enable users to operate controls and buttons even while wearing gloves. Short overhangs front and rear make for an approach angle of 37 degrees and a departure angle of 49 degrees. The analogue dials are set in cubic housings and are always lit up for clear viewing on and off-road.

Boot space in the new Jimny starts at 85 litres with the rear seats in use and expands to 377-litres (53 litres more than the old car) when the rear seats are folded. There's also Suzuki's familiar Bluetooth Smartphone Linkage Display Audio unit with a 7-inch touchscreen on top models.

Based on European specifications, the Suzuki Jimny will be available with (speed related) autonomous emergency braking but whether that's a feature of the auto when it comes to Australia remains to be seen.

Being a proper off-roader, the Jimny comes with a low range transfer gear alongside 2H (2WD-high gear) and 4H (4WD-high gear) modes.
