North Korea warns USA attitude is 'highly REGRETTABLE' as tensions soar

Before leaving Pyongyang, Pompeo told reporters that his conversations with senior North Korean official Kim Yong-chol had been productive, conducted in good faith and that a great deal of progress had been made in some areas.

"There is still much work to do to establish what the precise timeline of the various events will be", Pompeo said in Tokyo.

But Pyongyang said Saturday of its meetings with Pompeo, "We expected the usa side to come up with constructive measures to help build trust in the spirit of reunion".

His rosy outlook was nearly immediately rejected by North Korea's foreign ministry, which called the USA attitude to the talks "regrettable" and accused the United States of making unilateral demands for denuclearization.

The outcome of the latest US-North Korean talks on denuclearization was clearly a matter of perspective.

A former top USA diplomat for Asia, Daniel Russel, said the setback was to be expected and warned Trump he is engaged in a long negotiation that would not produce easy quick, made for television results that the president likely wants.

On his flight to Pyongyang, Pompeo said both sides made commitments at the Singapore summit on the complete denuclearization of North Korea and on what a transformed relationship between their two countries might look like.

Mr Pompeo's visit represents the highest level meeting between USA and North Korean officials since Mr Trump and Mr Kim Jong Un held their unprecedented summit in Singapore on June 12.

And he said progress had been made towards agreeing "the modalities" of North Korea's destruction of a missile facility.

Pompeo did not meet Kim as he had done on two previous visits to North Korea this year but handed over a letter to him from Trump.

'People are going to make stray comments after meetings, ' Pompeo said.

When Kim added Pompeo "might not have slept well last night" following Friday's discussions, the top us diplomat said he "slept just fine" and that he agreed the two sides "did have a good set of conversations".

Opening the talks after the U.S. envoy arrived on Friday, his opposite number Kim Yong Chol joked to Pompeo that he must be getting used to the city by now.

Pompeo also insisted that Pyongyang was committed to broad denuclearisation and said that while some security guarantees could be on the table during the process, sanctions relief would not be. Now, three weeks later, the two sides were still at odds on all issues, including exactly what denuclearization means and how it might be verified, after a third visit to Pyongyang by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

But it said the USA had only came up with unilateral demands for denuclearization, . calling for complete, verificable, irreversible denuclearization and verification. all of which, the statement said, run counter to the spirit of the June 12th summit.

KCNA said the North also offered to discuss declaring a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War marking next month's anniversary of the armistice agreement, but the USA side showed little interest, giving "certain conditions and excuses".

Last month, Trump told a crowd of supporters that the remains of 200 service members had "been sent back", but USA military officials later said that was not the case.

Before arriving in North Korea, Pompeo said he was seeking to "fill in" some details on North Korea's commitments and maintain the momentum toward implementing the agreement from the summit. He added that the Trump administration was committed to reaching a deal under which North Korea would denuclearize and realize economic benefits in return.

CVID stands for complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of the North's nuclear program, an oft-cited demand by Washington for Pyongyang.

Trump and Kim pledged at their June 12 summit meeting in Singapore to move toward denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. Trump said after the Singapore summit that Kim had agreed to send the remains back to the United States.
