Mike Pompeo heading to North Korea for nuclear talks

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un smiles during a visit to the Chemical Material Institute of the Academy of Defence Science in Hamhung

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to travel to North Korea on Thursday to take the next step in negotiations, in his first official visit to Pyongyang since the summit on June 12 in Singapore.

"It's to North Korea's advantage to see these programs dismantled very quickly, because then the elimination of sanctions, aid by South Korea, Japan and others, can all begin to flow", he told Brennan.

North Korea agreed at the summit to "work towards denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", but the joint statement signed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump gave no details on how or when Pyongyang might surrender its nuclear weapons.

North Korea continued to expand one of its missile plants during the weeks leading up its summit with the USA last month, according to an analysis of satellite imagery by researchers in the U.S.

Diplomatic gains have been marred by US intelligence and satellite images suggesting that the North is moving ahead with its nuclear weapons programs despite Kim's summit promise to work toward the "complete denuclearization" of the divided peninsula.

A delegation consisting of basketball players, South Korean officials and local media left in two planes from the Seongnam airbase for Pyongyang around 10 a.m., Efe news reported. The officials insisted on anonymity to discuss sensitive assessments about a country that has always been one of the most hard targets for spy agencies to penetrate.

He said the administration was well aware of North Korea's track record over the decades in dragging out negotiations with the U.S.to continue weapons development.

"We have developed a program".

Nam Sung-wook, a professor at Korea University in South Korea, said the USA officials or academics speaking out likely aimed to put pressure on both North Korea and Trump.

"Once they started playing, the players showed quick chemistry and I was proud of them", said Lee Moon-kyu, the head coach of South Korea's women's team, who will also lead a combined Koreas team at the Asian Games next month in Indonesia.

Even if North Korea is willing to cooperate, dismantling its secretive weapons of mass destruction programs, believed to encompass dozens of sites, will be tough. "I think they want to do it", he told Fox's Sunday Morning Futures in an interview that aired Sunday.

The president - who tweeted after the summit that "there is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea" - said in an interview broadcast Sunday that he believes Kim is honest, although he acknowledged a deal may not work out. They say any solid deal will require Kim to be completely transparent about his program - at a time when intelligence reports suggest he will try to deceive the United States about the extent of his covert weapons or facilities.

"We have a good chemistry together". China uses Dandong as a base for trading with North Korea. I got along really well with Chairman Kim.

"Now, we'll let their actions speak for themselves", he added.

Bolton also conceded that the speed of denuclearization depends on North Korea's cooperation - which is a wild card.
