Israel Strikes Assad Regime Weapons Depots in Syria

Jordanian soldiers control the border between Syria and Jordan on July 1

Foreign minister Ayman Safadi told Russian Federation that a ceasefire was needed in southern Syria, calling the situation a cause for "serious concern".

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said on Monday he will meet his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow later in the week to discuss developments in Deraa province, near Jordan's border.

More than 30 towns have already agreed to return to regime control and talks were focused on remaining opposition territory in Daraa's western countryside and the southern half of the city. Russian Federation wanted heavy weapons handed over in one go.

Renewed fighting along Jordan's northern border has prompted a new wave of refugees headed towards its territory.

Russia, which backs a Syrian government offensive, held talks last week with rebel forces who said they rejected a "humiliating" surrender deal.

The rebel camp has, however, been deeply split over the Russian demands, with some negotiators saying they wanted to continue the fighting and accusing some rebel commanders of cutting separate deals with the Russian military.

Haq said the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights had urged Jordan to open its border and for other countries in the region to welcome the civilian refugees.

Jordan's Prime Minister Omar Razzaz announced Sunday the launch of a nationwide campaign to provide aid to the displaced Syrians inside Syrian territories. Our country has reached its maximum capacity. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

The government's offensive has undermined a "de-escalation" agreement negotiated by the United States, Russia and Jordan in July 2017.

Al-Assad said earlier this month that he was still pursuing a political solution for Syria's rebel-held southwest, but would use military force if the effort failed. Despite Washington's threats that it would respond to breaches of that arrangement, it has so far shown no sign of doing so.

"Today will be the last round - either the rebels agree to these terms, or the military operations resume", the source said.

He added that Syria calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all Palestinian and Arab prisoners held in Israeli jails, chief among them is the Syrian Prisoners Sedqi al-Maqt and Amal Abu Saleh, who have been subjected to arbitrary detention, solitary confinement and torture after being subject to mock trials and malicious charges.

The observatory, a Britain-based war monitor, said air strikes had stopped for several days to allow for negotiations.

One strike killed at least 10 people including five children in the town of al-Sahwa, east of Daraa, it said, raising to 126 the number of civilians killed in the offensive since fighting escalated on June 19.
