Kevin Durant plans to re-sign with Golden State Warriors

Golden State Warriors Draymond Green and Kevin Durant talk during the third quarter of Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Oracle Arena in Oakland Calif. on Sunday

Re-signing Kevin Durant means that the Warriors are well on their way to have the highest payroll in the National Basketball Association with Stephen Curry playing under a deal that will pay him $37.4 million next season.

The team has gone 265-63 in his four seasons at the helm, making four trips to the NBA Finals and winning three titles.

Durant had stressed repeatedly throughout the 2017-18 season he planned to re-sign with the Warriors for fairly obvious reasons.

The New York Times first reported Durant's intention.

The 52-year-old Kerr signed a contract in 2014 with the Warriors for five years.

Golden State's biggest challenge in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets, also reached an agreement to hold on to a key piece as the NBA's free agency negotiations officially began. Paul missed the last two games of that series with an injury, and the Rockets wasted big leads in both.

Durant, 29, averaged 26.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists last season.

Durant will likely become a free agent in 2019 and sign a multi-year deal starting around $38 million.

The two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player will get maximum money but isn't committing to the team long term.

At the time of its original posting, Kobe Bryant was still the man and coming off a championship with his familiar support group of Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, and Lamar Odom, against the upstart Denver Nuggets squad.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity today because the deal can not be signed until Friday.
