U.S. Supreme Court won’t hear case of anti-gay marriage florist

Supreme Court sends back case of a Christian florist who refused to work a same-sex wedding

The Washington Supreme Court ruled previous year that the government may force Christians to serve same-sex "weddings", and in July 2017, the conservative Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the case.

Instead, the high court is ordering the Washington Supreme Court to take a fresh look at the case.

In its ruling Monday, the Supreme Court rejected those findings and said the lower court got the case backwards by putting the onus on Texas.

The lower court, said Alito, "enacted, with only very small changes, plans that had been developed by the Texas court". Lawmakers will be forced to redraw that one district.

The high court this term considered two cases from Wisconsin and Maryland to decide the question of how much partisanship is too much in the drawing of electoral districts.

"We conclude they do not", Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in an opinion for himself and his conservative colleagues, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Anthony Kennedy, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote the dissent, joined by justices Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan.

The challengers argued that Congressional District 27 and 35 were left in the "exact same configuration" as the 2011 maps that were ultimately struck down by a lower court in 2017.

Ken Paxton, the attorney general of Texas, said the decision was a win for Texas.

Though he did not find one in that case, he signaled his openness to striking down extreme partisan gerrymanders if the court could agree on a standard to do so.

In that case from Wisconsin last week, the justices ruled that the Wisconsin voters who sued over the Republican-drawn legislative districts did not prove they had legal standing to challenge them. Those maps were challenged and tossed out as unconstitutional, and a three-judge federal court created temporary maps that were used for the 2012 elections. It's a line repeated by many on the right.

In a 5-4 ruling, the conservative-majority court largely accepted the state's argument that the Republican-led Texas legislature acted in good faith when it adopted new electoral maps in 2013 for state legislative and US congressional seats.

The three-judge court concluded that some districts were nearly identical to the earlier versions and were rife with racial bias.

There have been calls in North Carolina for the creation of a redistricting process to be done outside the political realm, but no legislation requiring that has been approved.
