Trump urges Republican lawmakers to drop immigration effort

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo listens as President Donald Trump speaks during a cabinet meeting at the White House Thursday

Will's column follows a public outcry over President Donald Trump's zero tolerance enforcement policy at the U.S. -Mexico border, which has led to the separation of undocumented migrant children from their parents.

Despite his concession on Wednesday, Trump suggested on Friday that some of the wrenching tales that have emerged from the border were fabricated by Democrats, tweeting, "We can not allow our Country to be overrun by illegal immigrants as the Democrats tell their phony stories of sadness and grief, hoping it will help them in the elections".

While Trump said Republicans in Congress should stop wasting time on immigration until after the midterm elections, making compromise doubtful, the debate over this issue does not need to continue to devolve.

Trump's comments Friday came amid a report by the New York Daily News that said some facilities housing separated children are the same used for unaccompanied migrant minors, who in some cases are later being picked up by immigration agents when they turn 18. This is something some conservative lawmakers have spoke out against, saying those who crossed the border illegally should not be given amnesty.

McCaul on Sunday was quick to defend the president when questioned about the hurdles of getting an immigration bill passed.

"It's a horrifically chilling signal", said another retiring Republican, Rep. Mark Sanford of SC, who recently lost his primary election after frequently criticizing Trump. As he signed the executive order Wednesday, the president said that both his wife and his daughter, Ivanka Trump, "feel very strongly" about ending the practice.

On the matter of family separation - which the Trump administration is halting for now - the conservative bill allows children to be detained with their parents in Department of Homeland Security custody for longer than 20 days by giving DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen "discretion" to do so.

The House Republican immigration overhaul is dangling precariously. Several conservatives have said they won't vote for it and predicted it can't pass. "Dems are just playing games, have no intention of doing anything to solve this decades old problem".

The bill that the House will vote on this coming week is precisely what Democrats should want.

Republican leaders have struggled to rally support for a broad bill created to unite GOP moderates and conservatives, postponing a vote twice in the face of opposition.

If House votes on immigration fail Thursday - which lawmakers said is a real possibility - vulnerable Republicans are ready to defy their party establishment and work with Democrats to revive the effort.

Officials said the president's haphazard actions seem to have less to do with campaign politics - or even his own standing with voters - than ego. One is that Trump has yet to publicly endorse the compromise bill, although he told House Republicans during their closed-door meeting that he supports the measure and the Goodlatte bill. "We're going to see the same thing this summer if we don't change it".

Trump, in his remarks, also suggested those illegally in the United States commit more crimes on a statistical basis than citizens or resident aliens.

However, studies have shown that undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit a crime in the USA than native-born citizens, including one published by the libertarian CATO Institute this year.
