54% of voters blame parents for border family separations

It was widely assumed the toddler and her mother had been separated under President Donald Trump's now-rescinded policy that resulted in separating families entering the US illegally.

"Your loss will not have been in vain", Trump said. "We're going to have a safe country".

Amid mushrooming bipartisan concern over depictions of terrified migrant children separated from their parents, Trump on Wednesday had abruptly reversed course and signed an executive order to overturn the policy, although up to 2,000 children are still believed to be separated from their parents.

And the administration says it will now seek to detain immigrant families during their immigration proceedings, which has also stoked an outcry.

In recent weeks, more than 2,300 children were taken from their families under a "zero-tolerance" policy in which people entering the U.S. illegally face prosecution.

"These are the American citizens permanently separated from their loved ones", Mr Trump said on Friday, before introducing family members of victims.

Trump backed up his complaint with the unsupported claim that undocumented immigrants are more risky than the general population and shared statistics on crimes committed by undocumented immigrants without any context.

The Times report references a study from the Cato Institute, a libertarian organization.

The White House on Friday also accused media and opposition Democrats of pushing an agenda by misrepresenting a photograph linked to the policy. Beata Mejia-Mejia's 7-year-old son had been taken from her in May after they arrived from Guatemala. It was widely published, ending up on newspaper front pages.

An attorney in Texas has been trying to reunite parents at an immigration detention facility with their children after US authorities separated them on the southwest border. The accompanying article incorrectly stated the girl had been carried away from her mother, screaming. The separation here is from the facts.

The House Republican immigration overhaul is dangling precariously.

"I'm not sure why attacks on the media are necessary there", CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin said as she interrupted the coverage, adding that "obviously our hearts go out to them".

Justice officials shot back, maintaining that the department has made no changes to its hard-line stance on illegal border crossings as it continues to receive referrals for prosecutions from Customs and Border Protection agents.

All 435 seats in the House and a third of the 100-member Senate will be contested in the November election. Last year, not long after House Republicans stood in the Rose Garden with Trump celebrating passage of their replacement for former President Barack Obama's health care law, he mocked their legislation as a "mean" bill.

Trump has a few times invoked the name of Kate Steinle - a 32-year-old woman who died in 2015 after being shot by an immigrant previously deported - to push his immigration policies.

That dealt a serious blow to leaders' efforts to win support for legislation that already lacked enough votes to pass the House because of GOP divisions.

With sale of its jackets, Wildfang was more than halfway through its goal of raising $50,000 for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) in San Antonio, Texas, McIlroy said.

"You just fear that tweet in the morning", said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida. Dems are just playing games, have no intention of doing anything to solves this decades old problem. "We can pass great legislation after the Red Wave!"
