Airbus threatens to leave Britain over Brexit trade relations

Airbus has warned it could leave the United Kingdom in the event of a hard Brexit, putting around 14,000 jobs at risk. "We're coming into Article 50 in March and have not got any assurances on how we are going to get parts in and out of the plant going forward".

"People were saying it would never affect us here because it's too big a company".

He added: "We need to fight for it and we just need to try and stick together and give the Government a reason to keep us here".

Peter Sinnott who has worked at the Broughton site since 1980, said the news had been "inevitable" since the Brexit vote. Furthermore, he added, "Even if we are paying zero customs duties, we have to go through the processing at the border", which could lead to bottlenecks.

He added: "I'm 55 so it doesn't really worry me but there are younger lads in there with mortgages to pay".

The former Secretary of State for Wales, who represents Preseli Pembrokeshire, said: "The enormous Airbus factory in North Wales is one of the jewels in the crown of United Kingdom manufacturing".

Unite's assistant general secretary Steve Turner said: "The realities of a "cliff edge" Brexit and its impact on jobs in manufacturing communities across the four nations of the United Kingdom are becoming closer by day. There are so many people I know locally, neighbours and friends, who work here".

However, former UKIP leader Mr Farage described Airbus as "a very political project" and pointed out they receive large amounts of money from Brussels.

Darren Jones, whose Bristol North West constituency contains Airbus's Filton wing plant, attacked the Government for only listening to "hardline pro-Brexit MPs and not to the businesses that employ thousands of British workers, including Airbus".

He told Sky News: "Twenty years ago I heard vehicle manufacturers saying if Britain didn't join the euro they may well consider pulling out of Britain - Nissan, others like that".

But Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies, who backed Brexit, said there was a "lot of hyperbole flying around" as "we are getting to the business end of the negotiations".

A People's Vote spokesperson said the two years since the referendum had been characterised by "arcane parliamentary manoeuvres about this amendment or that amendment" and it was time to take the issue "beyond Westminster and back to the people". Rival aviation companies reiterated their commitment to United Kingdom investment on Friday although several said they wanted to see minimal disruption to trade following the negotiations.

Tom Williams, chief operating officer of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, said: "In any scenario, Brexit has severe negative consequences for the United Kingdom aerospace industry and Airbus in particular".

We have sought to highlight our concerns over the past 12 months, without success.

The aerospace firm Airbus has issued a strong warning over the impact of Britain's departure from the European Union, saying a withdrawal without a Brexit deal would put thousands of Airbus jobs in the United Kingdom at risk.

"Given the good progress that we are continuing to make in the negotiations we do not expect a no-deal scenario to arise".

"We want them to stay and we want to make that process of staying as easy as possible".
