ABC orders 'Roseanne' spinoff for fall minus Roseanne Barr

Less than a month after announcing it had canceled the popular, working class family centered sitcom "Roseanne" over a racist tweet, ABC has chose to launch a spin-off of the show, sans the main character.

Tom Werner and Roseanne Barr have reached an agreement that will allow Werner Entertainment to produce a spinoff of the Roseanne series for ABC without Barr's further creative or financial participation. Barr will have no creative or financial attachment to the show and put out a statement saying, "I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne".

ABC said Thursday that the new series has the working title "The Conners" and will star John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert and other "Roseanne" co-stars. But that was all brought to a screeching halt when Barr - who had transformed into a radical right-wing troll in recent years - fired off a racist tweet against former Obama adviser adviser Valerie Jarett.

How Barr's character, the family matriarch, will be erased from their lives was left unexplained for now by ABC.

ABC also put out a statement about the new show, saying, "The Conners' stories demonstrate that families can always find common ground through conversation, laughter and love".

In a joint statement, the cast expressed support for the project. ABC announced that the series had been canceled due to the post, and nearly immediately speculation began that a spinoff could be a possibility.

Roseanne Barr has posted her first photo since the announcement that The Conners has been given a greenlight from ABC.

But the comedy's return was an instant smash for ABC, owned by the Walt Disney Co., and was counted on to lead the network's fortunes next season.

Kantar Media said Roseanne earned an estimated $45 million in advertising revenue for ABC through last season's nine-episode run.

Bittersweet news for "Roseanne" fans - the show is coming back but without Roseanne Barr.
