PlayStation Now Will Let You Download PS4 Games This Year

PS4 blocks Fortnite Xbox and Switch cross-play because of ‘money’ says ex-Sony Online boss

The former boss of Sony Online Entertainment has shed some light on Sony's reasons for blocking cross-platform play, and perhaps unsurprisingly, it all boils down to one thing: Money.

In a follow-up tweet, Smedley explained that "when I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money".

According to a former Sony developer, the company's stance on this matter isn't all that surprising.

The image directly below depicts what Fortnite players on Nintendo Switch encounter if they want to use their Epic Games account that was previously linked to their PlayStation 4 console, with Smedley saying this practice stays in place due to Sony's concern of the bottom line. This was presented in the context of telling fans to keep up the pressure. For a long time now Sony has been the only console manufacturer reluctant to allow PS4 users to play with users on other hardware.

While a lack of console cross-platform play has always been an issue for fans of gaming, it feels like it's really come to a head recently with Fortnite Battle Royale.

PlayStation Hits will launch on 18 July and features more than 20 PS4 titles at a permanent low price of $19.99/£15.99. Sony issued a response to the backlash, but it didn't exactly assuage concerns.

This wasn't a problem that Xbox and PC users faced, and there's been some dissatisfaction among PlayStation users with friends on other platforms since.

Gamers, get ready. You may soon be able to download PlayStation Now games from the cloud.

Sony's decision to restrict PlayStation 4 owners from playing Epic Games's smash-hit "Fortnite" with players on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox sparked an uproar.
