Hurdles facing parents and children separated at US border

The focus has shifted to a new plan to keep children in detention longer than now permitted, but with their parents.

The House is to vote later this week on two bills that address broader immigration issues to protect young immigrant "Dreamers" from deportation and fund Mr Trump's border wall.

"We're going to present, after we get sort of buy-in from our Republican Conference, to our Democratic colleagues to say this is a simple, straightforward solution that doesn't carry with it a lot of the baggage that usually drags down immigration reform", the Texas Republican told reporters Tuesday.

How it would get passed: Quickly pass a narrow bill that would focus on this alone.

Former Trump senior adviser Steve Bannon said the president is emphasizing the policies that brought him to the White House.

For the thousands of children recently separated from their parents through Trump's crackdown, Bernal said the government should speed up its process and try to reunite families as soon as possible.

Leaders in both the House and Senate are struggling to shield the party's politicians from the public outcry over images of children taken from migrant parents and held in cages at the border.

Obviously, pounding away at illegal immigration-from the day he came down the Trump Tower escalator-worked well for the president in the last campaign.

"No one in Congress, Republican or Democrat, wants children separated from their parents", he said in a statement.

In his remarks, he endorsed both House immigration bills that build the wall, close legal loopholes, cancel the visa lottery, curb chain migration, and solve the border crisis and family separation issue by allowing for family detention and removal.

How many kids have been separated from parents?

Governors across the United States are now queuing up to say that they will not support the separations, with New York, Colorado and MA saying they will not provide troops to help secure the border - and Maryland recalling its soldiers.

And the administration cites the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act, which makes a first illegal entry into the US a misdemeanor.

Texas deputy sexually assaulted undocumented immigrant's child
He revealed that Nunez allegedly threatened the girl's undocumented mother with deportation if she reported the sexual assault. Salazar encourages undocumented people to report crimes against them and their families.

Under the policy, adults who try to cross into the USA illegally, many of whom plan to seek asylum, are placed in custody and undergo criminal prosecution.

There are 100 sites scattered across 17 states. It's not clear yet how the fight over the family separation policy will end differently.

The major change unveiled on Tuesday would loosen rules that now limit the amount of time minors can be held to 20 days, according to a Republican source familiar with the measure. (The media point out that's not true, but it's also true that conditions in the much-criticized warehousing facilities date to the Obama administration.) The president's wife says the administration must govern with "heart".

The Republican-controlled Congress is under pressure to curb the policy after it sparked widespread condemnation. And they all show big majorities, around two-thirds of Americans, disapproving of separating families at the border.

Cruz's bill would double the number of federal immigration judges, authorize new temporary shelters to house migrant families and limit the processing of asylum cases to no more than 14 days - a goal immigrant advocates say would be hard to meet.

John F. Kelly, then the homeland security secretary, said in March 2017 that children would be separated from their families as a deterrent to illegal immigration.

Without Democratic support, Republicans can not muster the 60 votes needed to move forward on legislation.

Trump has also falsely tried to blame Democrats for his administration's policy, which he has the power to end.

"There's no need for legislation, there's no need for anything else", Schumer added. "There's no need for anything else", Senator Schumer said.

Looking for news you can trust?

Anxious that the lack of progress on his signature border wall will make him look "soft", according to one adviser, Trump unleashed a series of tweets playing up the dangers posed by members of the MS-13 gang, which make up a minuscule percentage of those who cross the border.

He used the word "infest" to describe migrants coming to the USA illegally.
