Donald Trump, nervous Republicans scramble for legislative fix to family separation crisis

President Trump visited Capitol Hill on Tuesday to meet with anxious Republicans who hoped he'd help them put out the firestorm he started with his decision to separate parents and children.

When they reach the border, many hope for asylum - a hard process that the Center for Public Integrity explored in a story about teenage girls and boys fleeing killings and extortion.

Democrats and Republicans have spoken out against the policy while the Trump administration continues to defend it by arguing they are merely enforcing the law. In fact, it is new and a near blanket policy in practice and intention. "We're not the ones responsible for creating this problem", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. "We've inherited it".

A first-time border crossing is a misdemeanor, punishable by no more than six months in jail, a rare sentence.

US Customs and Border Protection said on Tuesday that 2,342 children had been separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border between 5 May and 9 June. There are now 12,000 children in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The protest is in response to the Trump's administration of separating children from their parents who are detained after trying to cross into the United States at the Mexico border.

Former First Lady Laura Bush meanwhile wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that the tactics were "immoral" and evoked Japanese-American internment camps during the Second World War.

Some crossers are motivated by poverty or they seek refuge with family here.

As his own supporters turn on him, the President stands firm, convinced he won the election on a promise of an immigration crackdown, and that is what Americans want. Most all of them share stories of fleeing drug cartels, extreme poverty, and gang violence.

Members will be waiting for Trump's feedback on both of the bills up for consideration.

More than 2,000 minors have been separated from their families since early May. When she took over a Clonakilty butcher's shop in the 1970s with her husband Eddie, Colette Twomey had no idea that a secret recipe was about to change their lives forever.

. "Now you don't have to prosecute them, but then we're not prosecuting them for coming in illegally".

"In the face of this ongoing human tragedy, let me be very clear: NY will not be party to this inhumane treatment of immigrant families", Governor Cuomo said in a statement. Many are placed in foster care or in factory-style shelters where they wait to be reunited with family members who live in the United States.

House Republicans were reportedly working on a revised plan that would allow children to be detained for longer than is now allowed but keeping them with their parents, the Associated Press reported.

But mothers with children and unaccompanied older minors who've declared a desire to obtain asylum have often been released from custody in relatively short time pending court appearances.

Anne Heaney, 74, a retired teacher, held a sign that read, "Children do not belong in cages".

Amnesty International branded the action "nothing short of torture" and Apple's chief executive Tim Cook called it "inhumane".

At the Tuesday rally, tech workers mixed with immigrants and activists, all horrified at the images of children being torn from their parents. Under the Obama administration, such families were usually referred for civil deportation proceedings, not requiring separation.
