Grandma strangles rabid bobcat with her bare hands

A Georgia woman says she killed a bobcat with her bare hands after she was attacked by the rabid animal.

The Athens-Banner Herald reports DeDe Phillips of Hart County went outside on June 7 to take a picture when the bobcat lunged at her. She added that the moment she saw the creature, the first thing that popped into her mind was "not today!"

Phillips said her father-in-law was a trapper so she remembered bobcats tend to go for the throat of their prey.

Phillips said she grew up in the country, where her father-in-law was once a trapper of bobcats.

Due to the encounter, Phillips suffered broken fingers on both her hands and cuts and bruises all over her body. But her plans changed when she spied a bobcat.

Animal Control officers came by later and found the bobcat was rabid.

Just moments before wrestling the wildcat last Thursday, Phillips put a sticker on the back of her new truck: "women who behave rarely make history".

The almost 40-pound animal jumped five feet and landed on her chest, and started attacking her face.

"I started praying, don't let her come to the door", said Phillips.

'It never budged, so I knew it was completely dead, ' she said.

Phillips' cousin set up a Fundly.com account to raise money for her medical expenses; she's already collected $24,200 as of Saturday afternoon.

"It could save someone else from going through this", she said. In this photo, a rescued bobcat waits to be fed at The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, Oct. 20, 2011.
