UK government faces more bruising Brexit debate in Commons

Brexit news EU UK latest Ireland border backstop

This amendment had looked risky for the prime minister.

In a few weeks, MPs will vote on another piece of Brexit-related legislation called the trade bill.

But she also set ground rules, saying she would not allow parliament to tie her hands in the Brexit negotiations in Brussels or allow lawmakers to overturn "the will of the British people" - conditions that limit the powers she can hand over.

"It was the Prime Minister's personal assurance that was very important to us, and she has given us that".

May, who leads a minority government propped up by the small Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), conceded that "we need parliamentary support" to implement Brexit. Within days of this electoral calamity, May was heavily criticized for her response to a genuine disaster - the devastating fire at Grenfell Tower that claimed 71 lives.

The government was braced for a tight battle after junior justice minister Phillip Lee, a personal friend of May's, resigned on Tuesday morning in order to back the veto amendment.

The Prime Minister was speaking as she confirmed that the Government will table a new amendment to her flagship EU Withdrawal Bill, setting out in more detail the terms of the "meaningful vote" promised to MPs on the final Brexit deal.

Lawmakers kicked off two days of debate on Tuesday on changes to May's Brexit blueprint, or European Union withdrawal bill, after the upper house of parliament, the House of Lords, introduced 15 changes.

It was defeated in the House of Commons by 327 votes to 126.

In the same session, Boris Johnson was seen smirking after Mr Corbyn suggested Donald Trump could do a better job at negotiating Brexit than Theresa May. The "backstop" is an emergency measure which would ensure no hard border emerges between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Donald Trump says North Korea no longer a nuclear threat: ‘sleep well!’
He met Kim again in May when Trump said he was withdrawing from the planned summit with Kim - a decision Trump quickly reversed. Trump's own chest-thumping tweet seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W.

With that in mind, May said she was planning to summon ministers to Chequers, her country residence, for an "away-day" aimed at ending months of squabbling and agreeing the contents of a so-called "white paper" policy document.

Some of the pro-EU rebels said they had been assured by May that elements proposed by Conservative lawmaker Dominic Grieve would be brought into the European Union withdrawal bill, which will sever ties with the bloc and "copy and paste" its laws.

At the same time, Ireland dismissed any idea that it might "fill Britain's role" in the European Union after Britain leaves.

The Labour whips - who enforce discipline in the party - instructed lawmakers Wednesday to abstain on an amendment favoring membership of the EEA.

On Wednesday, May had faced the prospect of losing a vote after rebels had indicated their support for a change introduced by the House of Lords to require ministers to report what efforts they had made to secure a customs union.

It seems that May will survive as Prime Minister - for now at least.

And as May and her government have repeatedly ruled out doing anything which would threaten the integrity of the United Kingdom, then it is hard to see how this won't point towards Britain accepting anything but the softest of soft Brexits. Yet how long will this unity last?

Labour's Caroline Flint, who backed Remain in the 2016 referendum, told MPs staying in the Single Market would not deal with many voters' concerns about immigration.

"That took up time and therefore was eating into the time not just to talk about Scottish devolution but also affected Wales and the border in Northern Ireland".
