Trump heaps praise on 'tough guy' Kim Jong Un

Russian President Vladimir Putin

North Korea's Kim Jong-un understands that denuclearization must happen "quickly", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday, June 14, warning there will be no sanctions relief for Pyongyang until the process is complete.

President Donald Trump's joint statement with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday provided few specifics and no binding commitments, but likely set in motion a series of events that could unseat the United States as the dominant world power.

But following a debriefing with Kang Kyung-wha, the South Korean foreign minister, and Taro Kono, her Japanese counterpart, Mr Pompeo told reporters that President Trump had been very clear with Kim that sanctions would only be addressed after "complete denuclearisation".

"Given that they were able to sign this agreement, it will prove that United States remains to be a superpower and also this will give them the right, more leverage on how they will engage with North Korea diplomatically or economically", he said.

President Trump and his media allies have asserted that Kim came to the negotiating table "on his knees" due to the ramping up of sanctions against the North.

Without drills, the U.S. forces in South Korea will wither, and if peace talks continue, the very rationale for them will erode as well.

The founder of Destiny Pictures, an independent production company in Hollywood, says that neither he nor his company were involved in the production of a short film made for the historic US-North Korean summit held in Singapore this week. Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government.

Representatives of the European Union, Japan, China, and Russian Federation were among those commending the historic summit-the first between the leaders of the United States and North Korea-where the communist dictatorship reaffirmed a commitment to give up nuclear weapons.

Trump hailed the summit in Singapore with Kim, in which the the North Korean leader agreed to work towards denuclearizing his country, although their agreement did not say how this would be done.

"The US-DPRK summit - the first in history - was an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future", Trump and Kim's joint statement read.

A North Korea expert with inside knowledge of the Trump administration agreed Tuesday that Trump had taken us back from the brink of war. "Everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", Trump tweeted.

Confident Pogba will shine at the World Cup, insists Sagna
Former France global Emmanuel Petit has challenged compatriot Paul Pogba to "get angry" at the World Cup this summer. Kylian Mbappe has now scored four goals in 15 appearances for France .

The cancellation is considered a concession to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The United States has long insisted on complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization by North Korea.

Even after Pompeo's remarks much is unclear about the next steps following the summit, but it was an improvement on where Trump left things.

Pompeo also said he anticipates the U.S. would next speak to North Korean officials "fairly quickly after we return to our home countries", adding that he was "very confident" that some form of engagement between the two sides would take place in the next week. After all, if there is no threat, why would the North Koreans need to give up their arsenal?

Tokyo is working on arranging a meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Kim, with one possibility being an Abe visit to Pyongyang around August, the Yomiuri newspaper reported. And it was certainly key to our opportunity for the summit in Singapore.

A government source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Japanese officials planned to discuss the summit with North Korean officials at an global conference on Northeast Asian security to be held in Mongolia on Thursday and Friday.

Kang said South Korea and the United States shared the same goals and approach to achieving denuclearization.

At the same time, Trump has been quick to criticize US allies, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, with whom he'd met at the G-7 summit just before departing for Singapore.

When South Korean President Moon Jae-in met Pompeo early Thursday, he reiterated Trump's upbeat assessment of the summit, saying that the world had "escaped the threat of nuclear war". "The lethal envelope of advanced air-defense systems continues to grow against our 4th Generation aircraft", General Mark Welsh, the former chief of staff for the U.S. Air Force, said in a statement.

"I am going from today", he said. It wasn't until Trump's tenure that North Korea began testing an intercontinental ballistic missile and the bellicose rhetoric between the two leaders ramped up.
