Rebel Wilson has Australian defamation payout slashed

The original damages sum awarded to Ms Wilson last September was the largest defamation payment ever ordered by an Australian court, and several media organisations questioned whether the decision set a new precedent for defamation payments.

A year ago, a jury found that Bauer Media, which publishes magazines like Australian Women's Weekly and Woman's Day, had defamed Wilson when it published a series of articles claiming she'd lied about her name, age, and other details about her life.

Bauer successfully challenged the finding that Wilson should be compensated for film roles, including Trolls and Kung Fu Panda 3, which she testified she had lost following the articles' publication.

A number of media companies - including Nine Entertainment, the publisher of this website - attempted to join Bauer Media in its appeal against the award to Wilson.

The appeal court removed the 3.9 million Australian dollars that the trial judge had awarded for roles lost because of damage done to her reputation.

Wilson said on Twitter the night before the judgment that she had won the case regardless of the damages awarded.

Britain's Tyson Fury, left, punches Sefer Seferi. "Tyson will step up each time", Warren said at a press conference. He vowed: "I'm happy to to be back and I'll take my career very seriously this time".

It also reduced her non-economic losses by AU$50,000 ($37,800) to AU$600,000 ($453,600).

The judge who determined the initial payout had relied on testimony from Wilson and two Hollywood agents that the articles, which were not published in the United States, still would have influenced movie industry decision makers, the appeals court judges added.

At the time, Wilson tweeted she would be donating the money to Australian charities and supporting the Australian film industry with the money.

When Wilson won the case past year, it was an Australian record for a case, much higher than the AUS$389,000 maximum previously set, by using her "global reach" as justification.

Wilson's legal representatives were not immediately available for comment.
