Kansas City In The Running To Host World Cup Soccer In 2026

The United bid by Canada Mexico and the United States was awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Edmonton's hopes of becoming a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup rest on a final vote Wednesday morning in Moscow.

FIFA's member associations had 11 billion reasons to say yes to the joint bid from Canada, the US and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup. Morocco could only offer the world governing body of soccer US$5 billion in profit from the expanded 48-team men's soccer showcase.

The North American bid beat competition from Morocco, which was hoping to become just the second African country to host soccer's biggest global tournament.

The majority of the 80 matches in the North American bid would be played in the United States, who hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Whether FIFA also extends this courtesy to Mexico and Canada - the latter a relative nonentity in global soccer that has qualified for just one World Cup in 1986 - remains to be seen.

Potential host cities include New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Mexico City, and Montreal; but not Chicago, after the Windy City pulled out of the North American bid. The United States will host the remaining 60, including the final.

The United bid was always the favourite, but triumphed by a larger than anticipated number after heavy support in Asia and Europe as well as in the Americas.

Federation Internationale de Football Association will have to decide how the games are divided up and which cities will be selected. Major League Soccer is already well established in the country's three biggest cities and will remain instrumental in developing players, with Canada's most promising rising star now featuring prominently on one of its teams.

But because the city has yet to be confirmed as an official Canadian host, a venue can not be finalized.

In the past 11 years Canada has developed three professional teams that compete in the USA -centric Major League Soccer: the Whitecaps, the Montreal Impact and Toronto FC - last year's league champions.

Field dimensions smaller than FIFA's standard for World Cup matches, Catlett said, were the chief obstacles. Both the United States and Canada failed to qualify for this year's World Cup. This effort was an enormous priority for former U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati and his successor Carlos Cordeiro and the victorious effort could be an enormous boost to the sport in the United States.

In the closing days before the vote, Trump ― who won't be president during the 2026 World Cup, even if he wins re-election in 2020 ― promised that visiting players and fans would not face visa problems around the tournament.
