After winning Brexit compromise, U.K.'s pro-EU rebels fear betrayal

Former justice minister Phillip Lee told the House of Commons he was ‘devastated’ over his resignation

Cross party MPs voted 372-126 against a House of Lords' amendment to the EU withdrawal bill, to force the government to negotiate remaining in the European Economic Area (EEA) after Brexit, on Wednesday.

The government must start talks with a group of pro-EU Conservative lawmakers to find a new wording for its position on giving parliament a "meaningful vote" on a Brexit deal.

(EurActiv) - Theresa May avoided a humiliating parliamentary defeat to her government's European Union withdrawal bill, but only after appearing to promise rebel MPs an effective block on a "no deal" Brexit.

Solicitor General Robert Buckland promised to work on the proposal taking into account concerns raised by former attorney general Dominic Grieve, a leading pro-European rebel.

The Prime Minister appears to have rowed back on promises to rebel MPs yesterday that she would discuss another concession with them this week. Yet another Brexit contradiction it seems and one that rebel, and opposition MPs need to keep a close eye on.

As the Brexit debate reached its fraught climax, she was holed up in the same House of Commons office, behind the Speaker's chair, where she spent more than an hour last Thursday trying to convince David Davis not to resign. As ever, Delano will keep you posted.

"The vote rejecting the Lords' amendment does not dispose of the issue". A paper laying out the UK government position, due to be published this month, has been delayed because the Cabinet can not agree on a united stance. Theresa May has said no British government would ever agree to a hard border there. The government says leaving the customs union will free the country to strike trade deals around the world.

Mrs May met pro-EU Tories in her private room in the Commons moments before a crucial vote to hear their demands for a truly meaningful vote on the final exit deal.

The bill will then go back to the Lords on Monday.

Earlier on Tuesday the government suffered a setback as one minister resigned over what he called the government's plans to "limit" the role of parliament in shaping Brexit.

But Brexit campaigners feared it could weaken Britain's negotiating stance in talks to leave the European Union and the Brexit ministry was quick to put out a statement saying: "We have not, and will not, agree to the House of Commons binding the government's hands in the negotiation".

The Labour leader teased Mrs May over whether she would follow suggestions from Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to allow US President Donald Trump to take over the Brexit talks, before accusing her of delaying pledges linked to Brexit.

It's highly likely that the lords will either reinstate their original amendment (or the Grieve version of their amendment), so we can expect many more conversations like this happening behind closed doors in the days to come.

Davis said Parliament would be involved in the process but MPs could not undue the 2016 referendum.

The fact is that the Tory rebels are still split on tactics, with some preferring to hold off until the Trade Bill next month to push a single market solution. That probably means the chances of a no-deal Brexit recede. After a bumpy week of Brexit spats within her administration and with the EU, May wants to fend off another setback in a long-awaited showdown with restive lawmakers.
