Uber turns to A.I. to identify drunk riders

Drunk college students

The spooky new algorithm will take various factors into consideration, including typos made while requesting a ride, the time taken by a user to interact with notifications, their travel speed, and even the angle at which the device is being held. A driver set to pick up a particularly tipsy passenger might get a notification on their phone beforehand, or they could be told to meet the rider at the designated location a bit later to give the person more time to get to the auto before driving off.

Uber has submitted a patent application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office in which it details an AI that can identify drunk and exhausted passengers.

According in the New York Post, the application, "Predicting user state using machine learning", is how Uber detailed the promised technology.

For many commuters who have had one too many after work, Uber has been a godsend, allowing over-the-limit passengers to stumble into a cab and get dropped off outside their door at the touch of a button. So it can better detect your unusual behavior.

For Uber drivers, dealing with drunk passengers is a drawback of the job.

Trump pledges to punish 'the people of Canada'
European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted: "There is a special place in heaven" for Trudeau. Mr Trump also explained the photo that went viral from the G-7 summit.

It would be cool if drivers got extra money for picking up drunk passengers.

As such, and we're spit-balling ideas here, the driver could refuse to pick up a drunk passenger opting to go after teetotallers instead.

The logo of Uber is seen on an iPad, during a news conference to announce Uber resumes ride-hailing service, in Taipei, Taiwan April 13, 2017.

It is unclear how riders will access Uber's VR system - whether or not they will have to don a used headset is unknown. A particularly drunk rider is likely to be paired with drivers who are experienced and trained in handling people in inebriated state.
