Trump declares North Korea nuclear threat over via Twitter

US President Donald Trump speaks at a press conference following the historic US-North Korea summit in Singapore

Pompeo is charged by Trump with leading the follow-on negotiations with North Korea. The president had announced a halt in the drills after his meeting with Kim on Tuesday.

The document the two leaders signed did not include details of how and when North Korea would denuclearize, nor did it spell out exactly what "security guarantees" the United States would provide to North Korea.

They walked in from opposite sides of the building and met in front of a row of interspersed American and North Korean flags. The Korean War ended in 1953 without a peace treaty, leaving the two sides in a technical state of war.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", he tweeted.

His assessment was ridiculed by Democratic lawmakers and some analysts, who suggested that North Korea remains a serious threat.

At a news conference after the meeting, Mr Trump said he would lift sanctions against North Korea once "nukes are no longer a factor".

"I support this as a first step to the comprehensive resolution of issues concerning North Korea".

In agreeing to the summit, Mr Trump risked granting Mr Kim his long-sought recognition on the world stage in hopes of ending the North's nuclear programme.

Stressing that he had tried to pitch Kim on possible economic gains, Trump played for reporters a video depicting a utopian North Korea-of the-future, where speedboats glide alongside opulent, modern skyscrapers.

Last year Kim was "Little Rocket Man", according to Trump, and USA officials regularly mentioned his likely role in the assassination of his half-brother with nerve agent in a Malaysian airport, as well as his uncle's execution. And if any skeptics of the diplomatic campaign he launched with his neighbors early this year remain inside his regime back home, the summit went a long way toward sidelining them even further.

Speaking in South Korea, where he discussed the outcome of the summit, Secretary Pompeo said there was still "a great deal of work to do" with North Korea.

Kate Middleton perfected summer style in a $70 Zara dress

Richard N. Haas, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said "the summit changed nothing".

Describing the war games as very provocative and a drain on the economy, Trump has said that the USA is not going to play war games: its military exercise with South Korea. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"

"In exchange for selfies in Singapore, we have undermined our maximum pressure policy and sanctions", Menendez said. -South Korea military exercises.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Japan saw "US-South Korean joint exercises and the US military presence in South Korea as vital to security in East Asia".

Trump also said that Korean war will "soon end".

Pompeo said he was there when Trump talked about it with Kim, and the president "made very clear" that the condition for the freeze was that good-faith talks be ongoing. "We paid for a big majority of them".

The move - long demanded by Pyongyang - has been seen as a major concession to North Korea and appeared to take United States allies in the region by surprise.

USA secretary of state Mike Pompeo arrived at Osan Air Base south of Seoul from Singapore early on Wednesday evening. Pompeo was slated to fly on to Beijing later Thursday.

Adam Mount, a US defence analyst, expressed anger about seeing the USA and North Korean flags side by side.

However, many South Koreans rushed to express their awe of Tuesday's events. -South Korea military exercises could be put back on if talks with Pyongyang do not progress.

South Korean Minister of Defence, Itsunori Onodera, said: "We would like to seek an understanding of this between Japan, the USA and South Korea".
