"'Those who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those doing it.' - Chinese Proverb", the first daughter wrote in a tweet that quickly went viral for apparently being fake. Her six-year-old daughter, Arabella Kushner, became an online sensation by singing ballads in Mandarin and reciting Chinese poetry in a video that was shown to President Xi Jinping during Donald Trump's visit to Beijing last year.

People in China began tweeting other sayings they thought Ivanka might have meant to use.

Roberts' colleague Chen Gao, a senior Chinese language lecturer, also told The Independent: "Many Chinese started joking about their own Chinese language skills, because they can't think of any old sayings with the English equivalents", she said.

The president's elder daughter fired off a celebratory message hours ahead of his historic summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un. Please help!' the news channel for Sina - the company behind Weibo, China's largest Twitter-like platform - wrote on its official account.

Some Weibo users suggested she might have mixed up the translation of the proverb, "A true gentleman should keep silent while watching a chess game", according to the New York Times.

She hired a Chinese-speaking nanny to tutor her daughter.

They also offered some snarky commentary, including one person who said, "Don't mistake something as a Chinese proverb simply because it's written in Chinese characters".

"It sounds more legitimate and credible to pronounce a quote coming from the ancient civilization of China", said Herzberg, who with his wife, Xue Qin, has written a book on Chinese proverbs.

"If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts", she wrote, attributing the quote to Einstein, before quickly being informed by other Twitter users that this was not an Einstein quote.

The blog Quote Investigator has found that the saying first emerged in a 1903 Chicago magazine in reference to innovation during that time. "But why are Trump WH aides giving our proverbs to China, increasing our proverb deficit?"
