Organizer of infamous failed Fyre Festival charged with duping customers again

Promoter of Fyre Festival sold bogus 'dinner with Le Bron James' tickets in new scheme authorities

Billy McFarland, the promoter of the failed Fyre Festival in the Bahamas, leaves federal court after pleading guilty to wire fraud charges, Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in NY.

Billy McFarland, the disgraced businessman behind last year's disastrous Fyre Festival, faces new charges related to a fraudulent ticket scam federal prosecutors say he ran while free on bail.

Prosecutors say McFarland committed crimes even after he pleaded guilty in March to defrauding investors and vendors in the Fyre Festival.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristy Greenberg called McFarland a financial threat to the community, saying he'd used the client list of the Fyre Festival to pitch a new ticket fraud that promised tickets to music, fashion and sporting events that he didn't possess and had no way of getting.

McFarland is reportedly now facing a new set of charges connected to a post-Fyre Festival ticket scam.

McFarland will be sentenced on June 21 in the festival fraud.

According to The Associated Press, Billy McFarland was arrested earlier today on more fraud charges. His lawyer did not immediately comment.

The Fyre Festival garnered national headlines in April 2017 after being advertised as an idyllic getaway to the Bahamas, complete with gourmet food, luxury accommodations, performances by Ja Rule and Blink-182.

NYC VIP Access was purporting to sell tickets to major events such as the Grammys, the Met Gala, Coachella, and the Super Bowl.

According to the filing, McFarland tried to cover up his involvement in NYC VIP Access by using a then-employee's email account instead of his own, according to the filing.

Because of the new complaint, the government has asked the judge in McFarland's other criminal case - the one he pled guilty to in March - to suspend the sentencing scheduled for next week until it can amend its pre-sentencing report. Both charges carry up a maximum of a 20 year sentence.
