Johnson on top of the world after Memphis victory

Johnson on top of the world after Memphis victory

"It feels like it's been a long time (since my last win), even though it's only been six months".

Two-time defending champ Daniel Berger (71-141) missed the cut.

Johnson and Putnam were tied for the lead at 15 under after the third round and were five strokes clear of the rest of the field.

Johnson put an exclamation point on his victory with a hole-out eagle from the fairway from 169 yards away on the closing hole, his second such hole out of the week.

"I can kind of control my own destiny", Johnson said. He won the Tournament of Champions in January and followed with a tie for second at Pebble Beach in February.

"I knew coming in this week that I was swinging really well and had a lot of confidence in my game". The way Johnson's playing, he sees no reason why he couldn't be the first.

Dustin Johnson reclaimed the World No.1 spot from Justin Thomas with a victory at the FedEx St Jude Classic the week before the US Open. "Normally you have to drive it really well to succeed here but my iron shots have been good when I've been in the fairway and I've managed myself out of the rough really well".

Dustin Johnson is back in his spot as the world's top-ranked golfer thanks to a dominant victory capped by an absolutely awesome hole-out for eagle.

"I was a little flat starting the day - I couldn't really get anything going", Johnson explained.

Johnson's final shot on the 18th hole was the final impressive shot in a tournament full of him.

It's been just two years since Johnson claimed his first major title at the 2016 U.S. Open, and he enters next week's version at Shinnecock Hills in great form.

Putnam, who has never won on the PGA Tour, matched the best round of his short career on Saturday and was delighted talking to the media after his round.

Putnam, a two-time victor on the Web.com Tour, had only one bogey through his first three rounds. Snedeker turned in a bogey-free round with eight birdies needing only 22 putts. Scott Piercy withdrew after nine holes at 5 over.

He holed out for eagle from 170 yards on the final hole to seal an emphatic six-stroke victory at the St. Jude Classic.
