Dixons Says Almost 6 Million Cards Targeted in Cyberattack

Dixons Carphone has confirmed there has been unauthorised access of data held by the company

Retailer Dixons Carphone has become the latest victim of a cyber attack after revealing 5.9 million customer bank card details and 1.2 million personal data records were hacked.

The hacking represents a further blow to the company following a series of profit warnings since last summer amid tough trading for its mobile phone arm.

According to Dixons Carphone, there's now "no evidence" that any fraudulent activity has taken place as a result of the breach.

Dixons Carphone has informed the relevant authorities, including the Information Commissioner's Office and Financial Conduct Authority, but stresses that 5.8 million card details are still protected by Chip-and-PIN systems.

Dixons said the hack occurred in one of the processing systems of Currys PC World and Dixons Travel stores.

The U.K. electronics retailer said 1.2 million records containing nonfinancial data, such as names, addresses and emails, were breached.

It goes on to offer the not-entirely-reassuring reassurance that it has "no evidence to date of any fraudulent use of the data as result of these incidents" before admitting the compromised information included (incomplete, in some cases) payment card data. "We've taken action to close off this unauthorised access and though we have now no evidence of fraud as a result of these incidents, we are taking this extremely seriously", the CEO said.

ZTE in jeopardy again as Senate defies Trump with potential new ban
The Senate has adopted a measure to block a deal between the Trump administration and Chinese telecommunications company ZTE. Rubio supports the new language in the defense bill.

It said there was now no evidence of any fraudulent use of the information - with the vast majority of the cards having chip and pin protection.

The data did not contain pin codes, card verification values (CVV) or any authentication data according to Dixons Carphone.

In a statement released this morning, the company said during a review of systems and data, it discovered that there has been "unauthorised access to certain data held by the company".

The company said that of the cards not secured with chip and pin, none were reported to have been misused, the rest of the cards should be secure.

Baldock said the company had engaged cyber security experts to handle the matter and would be communicating directly with those customers affected.

'We are contacting those whose non-financial personal data was accessed to inform them, to apologise, and to give them advice on any protective steps they should take. Baldock added that Dixons Carphone has also "added extra security measures" to its systems.
