Chinese official backs removal of US troops from Korean Peninsula

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un seemed to get along famously in Singapore

But Kim's wins - suspended U.S. military drills, new worldwide status, improved relations with China and South Korea and talk of easing sanctions - are more substantial.

Trump has already spoken to Moon by phone, in a 20-minute call following the USA president's historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday, which saw a pledge from both leaders to work towards the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

"We're not going to be doing the war games as long as we're negotiating in good faith", Trump told Fox News in an interview in Singapore after he met with Kim Jong Un.

South Korea and the United States forces themselves were shocked by the news, but North Korea and China both seized on this concession.

Trump on Tuesday seemed fine with this, saying he thought Kim was being honest. However, they've long wanted a meeting with a USA president.

While Pyongyang says it has intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach the USA mainland, Guam is in reach of medium-to-long-range rockets.

As US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew to South Korea for follow-up talks on Wednesday, much of Asia was still trying to process the whirlwind events of the day before.

"You know, those things, they cost".

Despite Trump's optimism following his summit with Kim, many remained skeptical that North Korea, infamous on the world stage for making empty promises, especially when it comes to its nuclear program, would follow through on its pledges from this week's meetings. "I want to get our soldiers out". The hostages are back home with their families.

"The United States is our ally, so the joint military drills are still necessary to maintain our relationship with the USA", said Lee Jae Sung, from Incheon.

He said many in the media were hoping that the talks would "blow up" and that Kim Jong would "humiliate and embarrass Trump". -South Korea joint military exercises that take place every year.

A senior South Korean defense ministry official said Tuesday that the South is trying to determine exactly what President Trump meant when he said that exercises would end.

There was confusion over Trump's comment. But "I've never agreed with 100 percent of what this president says off the cuff like that". -South Korean military drills and move forward with the plan to remove the 28,500 American troops stationed in Seoul.

Mattis was not among the surprised, according to a spokeswoman.

President Moon Jae-in is expected to be briefed personally by the USA secretary of state, who landed at Osan Air Base. "He was consulted" before Trump halted the exercises, she added.

On the other hand, Russian Federation and China, who joined North Korea in criticizing the joint military drills in the past, welcomed Trump's decision.

"Right now, the USA and South Korea are not engaged [on troop withdrawal], and we're the only ones who make up our mind on this", he said. "We're not engaged in any reduction of USA forces talks, and I think we all wait until after this settles and we go forward".
