Californians to vote on splitting state three ways

3 states update Measure To Split California Into 3 States Qualifies For November Ballot

California residents will get a chance to vote on a measure to divide the Golden State into three separate states, election officials said Tuesday.

The Cal 3 initiative gathered more than 600,000 signatures from registered voters across California's 58 counties, passing the 365,880 required by law.

He has described California as a state with crumbling bridges and roads, a struggling, underfunded education system and oppressively high taxes.

When a person or group backing a measure says it has enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, those signatures are turned over for verification.

Meanwhile, Northern California, which would be the richest of the three with a per capita income of around $63,000, would include the Bay Area and the 31 remaining counties north of Sacramento, the current state capital.

"Southern California" would include San Diego and most of the Central Valley.

What do you think of the proposal? Plan to split CA into 3 states submits signatures CAL 3 is led by venture capitalist Tim Draper. If a majority of voters who cast ballots agree, the process would begin for the first division of an existing US state since the creation of West Virginia in 1863.

Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, legislators put forth various proposals to split California in half or in thirds but none ever quite gained enough momentum.

Proponents of the proposal argue that Californians would be better off with smaller governments that can tailor their policies and actions. Each state, though different in size, would have roughly the same population, according to the proposal.

In California, the reasons for such an ongoing inner conflict stem most obviously from the state's geographic and demographic diversity and the unique identities of different regions. In the unlikely event the measure is approved, the change would be the first division of an existing US state since the creation of West Virginia in 1863.

This isn't the first time that Draper attempted to get an initiative to break apart the most populous state.

The plan would also need approval in the U.S. Congress, but would likely meet stiff opposition there as well because it would increase the number of Senators, and take away the advantage that Democrats have by being able to reliably claim all of California's electoral votes.
