British PM fends off Brexit parliamentary defeat

FG lauds outcome of Kim, Trump historic summit

That probably means the chances of a no-deal Brexit recede.

Addressing Conservative backbenchers in Westminster on Monday evening, the Prime Minister warned if a series of Lords amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill are approved by MPs, it will send the wrong message to Brussels.

Commenting after Tuesday's votes, Dr Lee said: "Delighted that the government has agreed to introduce an amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill which will give Parliament the voice I always wanted it to have in the Brexit process". That has potentially seismic consequences for the protracted and increasingly messy split from Brussels.

The government concession is all the more remarkable because of the strength of opposition to the original amendment from ministers.

"It not only has the risk of stopping Brexit, it's certainly going to make the negotiating position of the Government considerably diminished".

The Lib Dems, who identify strongly as an anti-Brexit party to the point of pushing for a second referendum and running by-elections in Remain-friendly seats on that platform, opposed the Government.

While in the end, only two Tory MPs - Ken Clarke and Anna Soubry - voted against the government, there were clashes over how much of a say Parliament should get as the United Kingdom leaves the European Union, with one side accusing the other of trying to "wreck" Brexit - and being accused in turn of being "zealots" who wanted to sideline Parliament. "Labour will only vote for a final Brexit deal if it delivers a strong relationship with the single market based on full tariff-free access and ensures no loss of rights and standards", Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Facebook.

The upshot of the shift may well be as dramatic as the parliamentary procedure is incomprehensible.

During three and a half hours of tense debate on amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill, government whips held whispered conferences with a handful of Tories on the Commons benches.

But the latest manoeuvre by a minority government that has been forced to compromise with parliament anxious some lawmakers who feared it would hand the European Union an incentive to withhold any agreement on an exit deal to force a "softer" Brexit.

"If we are heading for an impasse in November, everything is on the table".

MPs are to debate her government's plans for future customs relations with the European Union.

May's fragile government will be trying to defeat a rebellion by pro-EU lawmakers and reverse changes to its key piece of Brexit legislation as the matter comes before the House of Commons for two days of debate. We had a personal assurance that we would find a way to address the concerns in the House of Lords when the Bill goes back there.

"Secondly, we can not change the fundamental constitutional structure which makes the Government responsible for global relations and worldwide treaties".

But government officials admitted that the concession does constrain their freedom in the Brexit talks.

Brexiteers were dejected by the turn of events, but are pinning their immediate hopes on the detail in the government's compromise. Yes, it's a significant compromise but we live to fight another day.
