A 5-year-old girl was suddenly paralysed after a tick bite

A mother has warned parents to be vigilant about insect bites after her daughter, 5, was paralysed by a tick.

A mom in MS said she got the scare of her life last week when her young daughter temporarily lost the ability to walk after getting bit by a tick.

Griffin said Kailyn was "perfectly fine" the night before, but things took a "scary" turn on June 6 when she woke her up for school.

Kailyn had a CT scan and bloodwork at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where doctors diagnosed her with tick paralysis, The Washington Post reported.

"PLEASE for the love of god check your kids for ticks!" she wrote.
She removed the tick and rushed her daughter to hospital. It was unclear what type of tick bit her daughter. According to the Center for disease control U.S., symptoms usually occur within 24 hours after removal of the tick As expected, the effect of the toxin has passed and the girl returned to normal after 12 hours. As she helped Kailyn with her hair, Griffin found a sight that greatly alarmed her.

Women and children are most at risk. The reason? A tick bite. It wasn't until she was brushing Kailyn's hair and pulling it back into a ponytail that she spotted a tick.

"We are going to be encountering more and more cases because we are seeing more and more ticks", said Jim Wilson, President of Canada Lyme Disease Foundation. We are being admitted to the hospital for observation and we're hoping her balance gets straightened out!

Symptoms usually begin with numbness or tingling, fatigue or weakness.

Symptoms do not start right away, but typically start to appear after the tick has been feeding on the person or animal for four to seven days.

The little girl made a full recovery in hospital.

Once it was removed, Evelyn was walking the next day.

Fortunately, tick paralysis is easy to treat: simply remove the tick and the symptoms will subside with 12 to 24 hours - that is, if you remove the tick properly.

"Look who is walking out of the hospital!"

In Canada, tick species that can cause paralysis are found mostly in Southern British Columbia and Manitoba, but other species, like known Lyme-disease carriers blacklegged ticks, are aggressively expanding into new territory, even urban areas.
