Category 3 Hurricane Bud heads north off Mexico

Hurricane Bud

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Bud had maximum sustained winds of 115 miles per hour (185 kph) Monday morning.

The hurricane is moving north-west at about 10mph - a course it is expected to take until mid-week, the NHC said.

Hurricane Bud, the second official hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean, upgraded to a Category 3 storm on Monday, June 11.

"On the forecast track, the core of Bud and its stronger winds are expected to remain well offshore of the southwestern coast of mainland Mexico".

In South Florida, the National Weather Service's Miami office is calling for daily rain through the week, with overnight and morning showers on the east coast and afternoon and evening storms on the Gulf Coast. Forecasters said the storm could strengthen a bit more before a slow weakening trend started Tuesday.

A tropical storm watch is in effect from Manzanillo to Cabo Correintes.

The hurricane center said the storm could generate swells that cause life-threatening surf and rip currents over the coming days along Mexico's southwestern coast.

Hurricane Bud is the sequel to last week's Hurricane Aletta, which was eventually downgraded to a tropical storm.

The Atlantic hurricane season lasts until November 30.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Aletta's winds were down to 40 miles per hour (65 kph) and it was predicted to dissipate by late Monday or early Tuesday. The depression is now located about 665 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour.
