US suicide rates increased more than 25% since 1999, CDC says

In a concerning trend, deaths from suicide have increased in almost every USA state in recent years, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death and one of just three leading causes on the rise.

The rise in suicide rates was highest in the central, northern region of the USA, with North Dakota, for example, seeing a 57.6 percent increase since 1999.

Firearms were the most commonly reported method of suicides (48.5%), though decedents with known mental health conditions were less likely to die by firearm (40.6%) and more likely to use strangulation (31.3%) or poisoning (19.8%) than those without (26.9% and 10.4%, respectively). That is why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta chose to take a comprehensive look at suicides from 1999 to 2016.

Of those who took their own lives, fewer than half had been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, the report says.

The problems most frequently associated with suicide, according to the study, are strained relationships; life stressors, often involving work or finances; substance use problems; physical health conditions; and recent or impending crises.

This finding follows a 2017 CDC report that detailed the rise of suicide prevalence in rural U.S. counties. "We don't think we can just leave this to the mental health system to manage". In 2016, the Palmetto State's suicide rate peaked at 15.6 deaths per 100,000 people. "Over time, I figured out and learned through trial and error what worked for me to get past that feeling", said Mike Bushman of Naperville.

Suicide rates increased for all age groups under 75, but middle-aged adults aged 45 to 64 had the largest rate increase. While the study did not look at the potential reasons why that might be, Schuchat offered a possible explanation.

The Centers for Disease Control released the latest suicide rates across the United States. The information on contributing factors reflect what family and friends told coroners and police in a subgroup of states participating in the CDC's National Violent Death Reporting System.

Researchers say the nation's suicide rate is lowest in Washington D.C. and highest in Montana. "The widespread nature of the increase, in every state but one, really suggests that this is a national problem hitting most communities". With considerations to gender, significant suicide rate increases were observed among males and females in 34 and 43 states, respectively.

Florida and Georgia both saw an increase between 6-18 percent. Nevada was the only state to see a decrease.

"And, unfortunately, our data show that the problem is getting worse", Anne Schuchat, MD, principal deputy director at CDC, said at a press briefing, reports Medscape.

The Minnesota Health Department has increased efforts to identify at-risk communities to help reduce suicides.

The number one means to commit suicide was found to be firearms, followed by hanging, and then poisoning, including through opioids. It's important to keep in mind to remove access to firearms, medications, or any other potential tools they might use to harm themsevles. That number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
